Berkach is a village in the southern district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen in Thuringia . Since December 1, 2007, the formerly politically independent municipality has been part of the Grabfeld municipality . Berkach is located in a high trough on the border between Thuringia and Bavaria in Grabfeld .

history

Berkach was first mentioned under the name Percuhis in 783 . The place was a fiefdom of the Hochstift Würzburg and was under the jurisdiction of the Mellrichstadt district . The place initially belonged to the Henneberg and later the Saxon office of Maßfeld . The lords of Stein and von Bibra owned properties in the village .

Due to a Rezesses from 1670 the house of Saxony was responsible for the patronage and the spiritual jurisdiction, the centering jurisdiction but belonged to Wurzburg centering Mellrichstadt. As a result of the "Schalkau Exchange Agreement" of 1723, the place came from the Maßfeld office in the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen to the Behrungen office of the Duchy of Saxony-Hildburghausen .

In 1808, the Duchy of Saxony-Hildburghausen and the Grand Duchy of Würzburg agreed on a transfer of the Würzburg fiefs from Berkach to Saxony-Hildburghausen. In 1826 Berkach came to the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen with the office of Behrungen. Since 1868 it belonged to the district of Meiningen

Berkach has been part of the Free State of Thuringia since 1920 .

District Mayor

The last honorary mayor before the incorporation was Winfried Ansorg. He was elected on June 27, 2004. The current mayor is Uwe Thomas.

Attractions

The synagogue on Mühlfelder Strasse was re-consecrated in 1991 as a place of encounter with Jewish history and culture. This includes a restored mikvah and the Jewish cemetery above the Roth lawn with 145 grave stones. Due to multiple and continued external use, it survived the November pogrom of 1938 unscathed. In 1995 a memorial plaque to the 40 emigrated, deported and murdered Jewish citizens was placed inside.
