geography

Schwickershausen is on the north-western edge of the grave field on the foothills of the Rhön .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1187 as Schwiggershusin . A fortification in the place is pointed out at the same time as the mention of a ministerial of the Count von Henneberg , who ruled the country.

In the "Henneberg main division" in 1274 3/5 of the place came to the Henneberg-Hartenberg line and thus to the Römhild office , but 2/5 to Henneberg-Schleusingen and so later to the Maßfeld office . The Schleusinger share also included the manor, which from the 14th century to 1747 was owned by the von Kere family and their descendants in female succession ( von Bronsart ), since 1797 belonging to the von Stein zu Nordheim family . It was largely withdrawn from state rule through the imperial knighthood until 1803. The castle belonging to the manor was destroyed in the Peasants' War in 1525 and rebuilt in the Renaissance style from 1540. It was protected by a walled moat.

The Hartenberg share was sold to the Henneberg- (Aschach-) Römhild line in 1371 and helped develop Römhild and Behrungen . After the dissolution of the Duchy of Saxony-Römhild in 1710, it was partly Meiningisch and partly Coburgisch-Saalfeldisch, whereby the Meiningisch part was given to Sachsen-Hildburghausen ( Amt Behrungen ) through the Schalkau Exchange 1723 to 1826 , the Coburg-Saalfeldische part to Sachsen-Gotha in 1805 fell.

It was not until 1826 that everything could be united under Sachsen-Meiningen . Until then, Schwickershausen had two mayors. Finally, the Würzburg monastery also maintained high jurisdiction over the long two-lordly (until 1803 actually three-lordly) place.
