The Jewish cemetery Berkach located in the Thuringian town Berkach in -Meiningen Schmalkalden district .

history

A Jewish community in Berkach was established around 1700 when Jews expelled from neighboring Nordheim were allowed to settle in Berkach. In 1808 there were 19 Jewish families living in the village, in 1833 there were 152 Jewish community members (one third of 460 inhabitants) and in 1851 there were 170 in 36 families. In the mid-1920s, 28 Jewish residents were counted; in 1932 there were still 20 people. In 1938 nine Jews from Berkach were deported to the Buchenwald concentration camp , and the last were deported on October 6, 1943 . Today's synagogue was inaugurated in 1854 and the community laid out the Jewish cemetery after 1820. Until then, the burials took place in Kleinbardorf . In 1938 and 1990 the cemetery was desecrated.

Location and characterization

The cemetery is located east of the old country road after Behrungen in the immediate vicinity of the state border with Bavaria , formerly the inner-German border . There are still 145 tombstones ( Mazewa ), which are arranged in seven rows. The oldest burial site dates from 1846.
