The Schwarza Jewish Cemetery is located in the Thuringian town of Schwarza , a municipality in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district .

history

After the Thirty Years' War Jews were allowed to settle in Schwarza again. The year 1652 is documented, when Joseph Aaron moved with his family from Schmalkalden.

In 1669 eight Jewish families with 40 people lived in Schwarza. In 1767, 18 Jewish families lived there. In 1804 the Jewish community , which already existed in the 17th century, had 153 members. There were a maximum of 287 Jewish residents in 1846. After that, the number fell steadily. In 1920 there were 25 Jews living in Schwarza and in 1933 there were 10 Jews. The last of them were deported in 1942 . The year the Jewish cemetery was built is unknown. The first burial was in 1680 and the last in 1936. The oldest still legible tombstone is from 1693.

Location and characterization

The cemetery is located south of Schwarza, east of the old road to Rohr , on the Lindenrain in the Judenleite area. The cemetery has a park-like hillside location on the edge of the forest. On an area of ​​10 ares there are 71 tombstones ( Mazewa ). The tombstones are mostly labeled in Hebrew and have ornaments. There were desecrations in 2004 and 2008, among others.
