Kunstraub is the eleventh studio album by the German medieval rock band In Extremo . It was published in Germany on September 27, 2013 by Vertigo / Universal.

background

Title of both the album and the title track is art theft , this refers to the art theft in Rotterdam in 2012. This inspired band member Dr. Pymonte for writing the song, especially the number 7, which is important for the band, caught his eye. The album opens with the title Who sends the sun to sleep , a piece about a night of partying and the next morning. Paths without a Name is the title of the next song that revolves around the band's career. The protagonist of the song of the same name describes himself as a bon vivant , who, in love with himself, travels the whole world and leaves the women to foot the bill. With Heaven and Hell , In Extremo deal with the question of whether Heaven or Hell is preferable after death. "It hurts so much when I see the jugglers cry" says the chorus of the song Juggler , which deals with very talented but unemployed, poorly paid or otherwise disadvantaged artists. The title track Kunstraub is about the deed of the same name and the genius of the robbers, the bagpipe solo after the second chorus is also used as an intro for the concerts on this tour. The baptism of fire , previously released as a single, is a love song with the promise to go to the end with the partner. You and I is the title of the next piece, it is about a person who has a hard time with life and love for another person. The song Doof is about people who do completely pointless things in a humorous but also thoughtful way, for example "pulling cold snow through their noses when they have the strongest cold". Towards the end of the song, however, the singer gives away "his last beer", so he does a "stupid" act himself. Everything already seen is a relatively calm piece, which, like paths without a name , refers to the fact that the band has already seen all misery. "Belladonna" is the penultimate track on the CD and is a love song with a very ambiguous text. Lastly, love is also thematized in The Prey , but here it is more about the painful desire for the loved one and the "hunting" of this person.

Cover and booklet

The cover shows a golden picture frame as it is used for paintings from the Baroque era . In it there is an area in Bordeaux red , on which the flag smeared cross in white can be seen on the right. From the bottom left to the middle right and from the top left to the bottom middle, tapes like parcel tapes are stretched, on which "Art theft" and the InEx symbol alternate. At the bottom center is very small, as is usually the case with the picture names, IN EXTREMO. At the left edge there is a white blob of paint that runs downwards. Dirk Rudolph is responsible for the artwork. The booklet contains all the lyrics and, analogous to the art theft in Kunsthal Rotterdam , in which seven paintings were stolen, the seven portraits of the band members can be found as if from Rembrandt's workshop. They were made by the Russian Posin brothers in their workshop in Berlin-Neukölln .

Publications and Success

The album Kunstraub, which was again produced by the producer team Vincent Sorg and Jörg Umbreit in the Prinzipal Studios, is the eleventh studio album by the medieval rock band In Extremo . It rose to number 2 in the German album charts as well as number 19 in Austria and number 23 in Switzerland. It was nominated in February 2014 as the sixth album in a row by In Extremo for the Echo in the category "Rock / Alternative National".

reception

Ulf Kubanke from laut.de draws the following conclusion about the album: “ It's nice to see how an established veteran band breaks new ground without being unfaithful or artsy-fartsy. "( English artsy fartsy =" pseudo-artistic ";" bizarre and difficult to understand ")" In this form, the seven madmen in the fight for the genre throne are far from being scrapped. A Game of Thrones? Your “art theft” makes it clear: Game over! "

Ulrike Meyer-Potthoff from terrorverlag.com reviews as follows: “ IN EXTREMO have done everything right again with“ art theft ”. The fans will love the album and thanks to a certain mainstream potential, new fans will certainly be enthusiastic about InEx medieval rock. The popular stylistic ingredients have been redistributed in favor of a somewhat harder sound alignment, the formative medieval feeling is still not neglected - just like there will be guaranteed a lot of pyro effects again at the concerts of the “Art Robbery” tour. "

Andreas Schulz from musikreviews.de sums up that anything but the third # 1 in a row would be surprising. In his opinion, the band proves that the concept of rock and metal with medieval instruments is not a rigid corset. Although the corresponding sounds are included in all songs, the relationship to the "normal" rock instruments is perfectly balanced.
