The Urban Dictionary is an online dictionary of English slang words, expressions and names.
The explanations are created by users. According to urbandictionary.com, over 6.6 million definitions have been written since 1999 (as of May 2012).
content
The definitions in the Urban Dictionary explain slang expressions or neologisms , phrases and names in the English language that are often not found in other reference books. Most words have multiple definitions and examples.
Many entries in the Urban Dictionary are vulgar, mundane, or offensive; very often the sexual aspect of a word is explained first. This is usually supposed to be funny or sarcastic. Some definitions also have images, but users cannot upload them directly to the page.
Racist , homophobic and sexist expressions are tolerated on the site as long as their definitions only have an explanatory function and are not offensive on their part. The Urban Dictionary's usage guidelines encourage users to avoid definitions that include inside jokes , personal information about people that are not widely known, nonsense, advertisements, or descriptions of sexual violence.
Quality control
Quality control is democratic and takes place on two levels:
- First, volunteers vote on whether a newly created definition is accepted or rejected. The decisive factor is whether the content of the definition is compatible with the terms of use of the site. Only when a definition has been accepted does it appear in the dictionary.
- Then all visitors to the site can rate the individual entries as good or bad. This evaluation is visible and decides where the respective definition appears.
