dict.cc is a free, multilingual online dictionary . For offline use, the dictionaries can be downloaded as text files and used in various programs under Windows , Apple iOS , Android and Palm OS . Dict.cc GmbH is based in the Austrian capital Vienna .

history

The website was launched in 2002 by the Austrian Paul Hemetsberger (* 1977). His vision is to provide hundreds of languages in a few years.

At the beginning of February 2005 Paul Hemetsberger stopped the download offer of the word lists under the conditions of the free GNU General Public License (GPL). He re-released it later in the year, but since then under a proprietary license that no longer gives users the same freedom. Nonetheless, he left all contributions from users who had contributed to the then GPL-licensed project in the lists.

Building the vocabulary

Like the market leader in online dictionaries, LEO , dict.cc offers users the option of suggesting terms for entry. In contrast to LEO, these new entries are then not checked editorially, but by the users themselves using a multi-level validation system. So everyone can help improve vocabulary.

languages

The German - English dictionary, which has existed since the website was founded, currently contains the largest vocabulary . Additional languages have been available since November 2009, each with translations into German and English. There are currently another 50 dictionaries; these are in the order of the verified vocabulary size (descending): Swedish , Icelandic , Russian , Romanian , French , Italian , Portuguese , Dutch , Hungarian , Slovak , Latin , Finnish , Spanish , Bulgarian , Croatian , Norwegian , Czech , Danish , Turkish , Polish , Esperanto , Serbian , Greek , Bosnian and Albanian .

The interest of users in adding additional languages is queried on a wish list, on which interested parties can also register as future translators or employees with their email address.

Data

With over 1,210,000 translations (as of April 2020), the German-English dictionary is more extensive than LEO. The remaining 50 dictionaries together contain more than 1.6 million (as of April 2020) verified translations. In addition, there are over 1.2 million inflections .

The website also includes a forum with over 33,380 contributing users and over 770,000 postings . 11 servers are running in parallel in order to be able to process the more than 150 million page views per month quickly enough. (As of March 15, 2015)

Speech output

For each entry in the languages English and German, an automatic speech output can be generated using speech synthesis . In addition, users have the option of making a voice recording of all entries themselves. The system is similar to that of the vocabulary structure. More than 1,217,800 verified voice recordings were made by native speakers (as of November 2019).

Vocabulary trainer

To improve language skills, a vocabulary trainer is also offered, which can easily be supplemented with entries from the dictionary. It is also possible for every user to make their vocabulary lists publicly available, which means that a large selection of vocabulary queries is available.
