My mad heart is the eighth studio album by the band In Extremo . In addition to the songs composed in High German by the band itself, the album also contains four historical compositions. The musicians used electronically amplified, modern as well as a large number of medieval instruments.

Emergence

In November 2004 In Extremo rented the Principal Studios , a converted former farm in Ottmarsbocholt in the Münsterland . Under the direction of producers Jörg Umbreit and Vincent Sorg , the band recorded the tracks for the album within six weeks. At the beginning of May 2005, the single Nur ihr alone came onto the market, before Mein rasend Herz was released on May 30, 2005 .

Music and lyrics

As with the previous In Extremo albums, both lyrics and music are given as a collaborative effort by the entire band. The band's own texts, which are written in High German, deal with love, pain and death and the vagabond life of the minstrels , the jugglers and the seafarers .

The band is constantly looking for medieval poetry that they reproduce in the original language and interpret musically according to their understanding. The Wessebronner Gebet is an Old High German poem from the 8th century and Tannhuser is a song by the minstrel Tannhäuser from the 12th century, which the band plays with exclusively acoustic instruments. Poc Vecem comes from the troubadour Peire Vidal and is written in Occitan . Here guest musician Robert Beckmann can be heard on the fiddle and as a speaker. For Fontaine la Jolie is a Breton folk song.

The song Liam is a collaboration between In Extremo and the musician Rea Garvey , who gave the song a Gaelic text and also took part in the recordings as a guest singer. It is about the grief of a young woman whose lover perished at sea.

The love song Horizont , which guest singer Marta Jandová sings together with Michael Rhein (“The Last Unicorn”), the front man of In Extremo, is about the remorse of a sailor in the hour of his death.

In their music, the seven-piece band uses electronically amplified musical instruments such as electric guitar , electric bass and drums , which are supported by acoustic and sometimes historical instruments such as three dominant bagpipes , shawms , a harp and a nyckel harpa .

Singles

The single Nur ihr alone from 2005 also contains a live version of the songs Hiemali tempore and Vollmond . The lyrics to Hiemali tempore were handed down in the Carmina Burana and first published by In Extremo in their interpretation in Latin in 1998 on the album Weckt die Toten . The song is about players who, after a drinking bout, roll dice for their clothes in the warm tavern in winter. Vollmond , which was first released as a single in 2000, is a composition by In Extremo and is about vampires.

The second single with the title Horizont was released in September 2005. It also contains the title Spielmanns Wiederkehr and live from the “Burgentour”, the songs Captus est and Mein rasend Herz .

In Extremo's participation in the Bundesvision Song Contest 2006 with a German version of the song Liam is documented by the single of the same name from February 2006. It contains the song in German, Gaelic and a live version. The CD also contains a video recording of the Federal Vision contribution. The band had reached third place at the event on February 9, 2006 in Wetzlar .
