history

The first municipal stadium was built in 1923. The current stadium was opened on September 24, 1961 and held around 8,000 spectators. Initially, the venue had the roofed main and opposite stands. The north curve was inaugurated in 1965. Two years later, the sports facility received an athletics facility , which can no longer be used today. In 1982 the south curve was opened.

The first major changes to the stadium were made in 1992. The reason for this was the visit of Pope John Paul II to the diocese of Arezzo-Cortona-Sansepolcro on September 19th and 20th, 1992. He held a mass in the stadium . The main stand was renovated, security measures were increased and the changing rooms, the press room and the entrances were renewed.

In 2004, AC Arezzo made it into Serie B , Italy's second-highest division. For this occasion, the old grandstand in the south curve was torn down and a steel grandstand was set up directly behind the field. Part of the athletics track was also removed for this purpose. The grandstand was named Curva Lauro Minghelli . This was in honor of the former AC Arezzo captain Lauro Minghelli, who died in 2004 at the age of 31 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Until November 18, 2006, the stadium was named Stadio Comunale , when the Arezzo City Council decided to give it its current name, Stadio Città di Arezzo . From 1987 to 2006 the Arezzo Wave music festival took place in the stadium .
