The Stadio Sandro Cabassi is a football stadium in the Italian city of Carpi . It has space for 4,164 spectators and is the home of the FC Carpi club .

history

The Stadio Sandro Cabassi in Carpi , a town with almost 70,000 inhabitants in the province of Modena in Italy's central north Emilia-Romagna region , was built between 1926 and 1928 and opened on October 21 of the latter year. At first it was named Stadio Communale , which was to change again after the end of the Second World War. Then it got its current name after Sandro Cabassi, a member of the Fronte della gioventù per l'indipendenza nazionale e per la libertà, the organization that fought against Italian fascism around Duce Benito Mussolini and was also involved in the ousting of the dictator. Cabassi, born in Carpi, died in 1944. Since then, the local stadium has been called Stadio Sandro Cabassi .

The football club FC Carpi has played its home games there since the sports facility was built in 1928 . Carpi has distinguished itself in its club history above all by commuting through the lower-class Italian leagues for decades and not getting beyond the third division. It was not until the 2013/14 season that FC Carpi made it into Serie B , the second-highest division in Italian football. Previously, they had prevailed in playoff games for promotion, first against FC Südtirol and then against the big favorites and long-time first division club US Lecce , thus ensuring their first promotion to the second division.

In addition to FC Carpi games, the Sandro Cabassi stadium also hosted a game by the Italian national soccer team U18, which met England on April 12, 2011 in Carpi and drew 1-1 with their opponent.

The Stadio Sandro Cabassi currently has space for 4,164 spectators, with just under 700 seats. After qualifying for Serie B for the first time, the club received a stipulation from the Italian association that the capacity, especially the number of seats, had to be increased in order to meet the criteria of this league. Therefore, renovation and expansion work is currently underway at the Stadio Sandro Cabassi, where on August 31, Calcio Padova played for the first second division game in this stadium.
