In Extremo is a German band that is assigned to medieval rock . The seven-person group was founded in 1995 in Berlin . With over 1.5 million records sold, it is the most commercially successful formation in the field of medieval rock / metal .

history

Michael Robert Rhein (aka The Last Unicorn )

In Extremo (InEx for short) emerged from two initially independent projects: a nameless pure medieval band and a rock band. The formation became known through frequent presence at medieval markets and other events where the musicians played their acoustic pieces. On April 11, 1995, during rehearsals for the season, Michael Robert Rhein (alias The Last Unicorn ) invented the Latin project name “In Extremo”, which means “at last” or “in perfection” in German.

1995–1998: Separate projects

The founding members of the Medieval Band were: The Last Unicorn, Flex the Bendable, Conny Fuchs, who, however, had already worked for Dr. Pymonte made way, and Sen Pusterbalg, who was replaced by Yellow Pfeiffer shortly after the official establishment. The rock band originally consisted of the members with the stage names Thomas der Münzer, Morgenstern and Die Lutter.

The increasing number of visitors, pressure from the record label at the time and their own interest led In Extremo to start an attempt in 1995 to combine bagpipes with rock guitars. A rock group was brought in to integrate modern instruments such as drums , electric bass and electric guitar into the acoustic pieces .

In August 1996, work began on the first in-extremo album, which already included two tracks from the new rock program. Since the album had no official name, it was called In Extremo Gold because of the golden cover . It was only when it was re-released in 2006 that the album was officially named Die Goldene . From February 1997 it was, like the single Der Galgen , distributed independently on medieval markets.

In Extremo they continued to play separately as a medieval and rock formation until they gave their first joint live rock concert on March 29, 1997; therefore the band gives this date as the foundation date. In 1998 the second medieval album Hameln was released as well as the medieval live album Die Verrückten sind in der Stadt .

1998–2000: First years as a medieval rock band

In January 1998 the two projects were officially merged and on April 11, 1998 the first In Extremo concert with a "large cast" took place at Rabenstein Castle in Brandenburg. The Berlin independent label Vielklang became aware of In Extremo, the band signed their first artist contract and, two months after their last studio stay, recorded their medieval rock debut in just twelve days, Weckt die Toten! on. The album consists mainly of medieval songs, some of which are written in medieval languages. Only a few songs were written by In Extremo themselves. This was followed by a tour in Germany, while the readers of Rock Hard magazine voted the band “Newcomer of the Year”.

At the turn of the year the next album was tackled. In the spring of 1999 In Extremo signed with the major label Mercury / Universal. For the band's two-year birthday concert, the front man Michael Robert Rhein alias “The Last Unicorn” suffered severe burns during a fire-breathing show in the Mannheim Capitol. Two months later, “The Last Unicorn” took the stage again for the band's first concert abroad at the Dynamo Festival in Holland.

The promo CD, a cover version of The Sisters of Mercy classic This Corrosion with an accompanying video clip premiere, heralded the following album, Revered and Spit on . The album surprisingly reached number 11 in the German charts. After the release of the last album In Extremo went on tour in Germany and abroad. The guitarist Thomas Mund alias Thomas der Münzer suffered from severe depression, so he was admitted to a clinic. His successor was Sebastian Oliver Lange alias Van Lange.

2000–2006: new millennium

With the release of the single Vollmond , the next studio album Sünder ohne Zügel was announced, which was released in 2001. For the first time, In Extremo reached the top ten of the German album charts and the album charts of Austria. After that, In Extremo had their first and only virtual appearance in the German successful computer game Gothic by the German computer game developer Piranha Bytes with the acoustic version of the song Herr Mannelig from the album Verehrt und Angespien . In Extremo they then did a small festival tour, during which the live video for the Promo Wind was made. Bassist Lutter had himself hospitalized the day before the start of the autumn tour and was diagnosed with colon cancer . The tour was postponed for the time being, but later, with bassist Toddy from the band BOON, still carried out as a substitute. On the next Christmas tour, bassist Die Lutter was back on stage. The band was nominated for the 'Echo' in the 'National NU Metal / Alternative Rock' category, which Rammstein won. Then the first live DVD Live - 2002 was released, which contained concerts from the Kyffhäuser and Taubertal Festival. At the same time, a suitable live CD and DVD was also released. In 2011, the band was awarded the gold record for the DVD .

The next and seventh studio album was released in 2003 under the title Seven . It reached number 3 in the German, Swiss and Austrian album charts. For the album, the band was awarded the gold record in the same year. The videos for the singles Kiss me and Erdbeermund were often broadcast on television. The tour that followed was In Extremo's most successful tour to date.

In 2005, the next studio album, Mein rasend Herz, was released with the single Only you alone , for which a music video was shot with real Japanese tourists. Michael Robert Rhein's daughter Jaella also played in the video. Like seven, the album of the same name reached number 3 in the German, Swiss and Austrian album charts. The next tour was even more successful and then the single Horizont was released. The band released a live CD and DVD from the tour entitled Raue Spree 2005 ; A gold record was awarded for the DVD in 2007.

style

Instruments

In addition to electric guitar, bass and drums, In Extremo is characterized by - for a rock band - unconventional instruments, mainly of medieval origin. The hurdy-gurdy , bagpipe , shawm , nyckelharpa , harp , cister , trumscheit , dulcimer , tabla , davul and sound tree are to be mentioned . The band is known for the pyrotechnics used at their concerts .

Some of the bagpipes were self-made (Dr. Pymonte), but some are also built by a well-known bagpipe maker. A frame drum covered with a whole horse's skin , called "The Horse", is also self-made . Most other instruments are only made by a few instrument makers.

Texts

Many of the lyrics of the first albums and a few of the lyrics of the newer albums are not composed by the band themselves, but come - like the instruments - from different regions of the European Middle Ages (8th to 15th century) and the early modern period (up to 18th century) ). Therefore, they are written in many different languages, not all of which the band members can speak. The languages include Icelandic , Swedish ( Nysvenska more precisely ), Old French , Middle High German and Old High German , Latin , Hebrew and many more. The best-known author of some texts is the French poet François Villon (e.g. Red Hair or Strawberry Mouth , in the German adaptation of Paul Zech ). But also poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ( Pied Piper ), Ludwig Uhland ( Des Sängers Fluch - which In Extremo slightly changed and called Spielmannsfluch ) and Frank Wedekind ( The Aunt Murderer , renamed from In Extremo to Nightmare ) as well as texts from the medieval text book Carmina Burana were used. On the album Mein rasend Herz , In Extremo first wrote the self-written text for the song Liam in German and then had it translated into Gaelic by Rea Garvey , who is also a guest singer on this song .

Appearances

Their first big appearance was in the first part of the computer game Gothic , when they performed the acoustic version of the song Herr Mannelig from the album Verehrt und Angespien in the second chapter to the amusement of the diggers in the old camp , but this only in the German-language edition of the Game is included.

With the success, the music channels also became aware of In Extremo. So they were invited to the TV show Viva Interaktiv . There they answered questions for 15 minutes and played two songs. At the time, they declined an invitation from Top of the Pops to play Küss Mich there because, according to “The Last Unicorn”, it was not their milieu. Nevertheless, they accepted another invitation in 2005 and played the play Nur Ihr alone as part of the show .

At this time, the audience for live performances also grew. The band's path led away from marketplaces and medieval festivals to festivals such as Wacken Open Air , Rock am Ring , the Taubertal Festival or Nova Rock (Austria). In 2015, In Extremo performed again in the support program of the Böhsen Onkelz at their Böhse-fürs-Leben concerts (June 19/20 and 26/27 2015) at the Hockenheimring in front of a total of around 350,000 visitors.
