Jonathan Howsmon Davis (born January 18, 1971 in Bakersfield , California ) is an American musician and singer with the nu-metal band Korn . As a musical side project, he is also active for the band Jonathan Davis and the SFA .

resume

Jonathan Davis grew up in Bakersfield with his father and stepmother. His childhood was marked by hardship and dire experiences, including childhood sexual abuse , school bullying, and a stepmother who despised and insulted him. He later processed this experience in many Korn songs.

His interest in music was sparked when he was given a drum kit at a young age . He got his first musical inspiration in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar .

Davis, who ultimately named the group "Korn", was the last to join the band. The two guitarists James "Munky" Shaffer and Brian "Head" Welch discovered him in a bar when he was playing with his band, Sex Art . Originally, the two only wanted to stay in the bar for a short time, but decided to hear the concert through to the end because they were enthusiastic about it. Immediately after the performance, they offered Davis to join their band. After visiting a clairvoyant , he agreed to what is considered the formation of the band Korn.

The band achieved great popularity with their first releases such as the singles Blind and ADIDAS . Since then, Korn has been one of the greats of the rock scene, even if the popularity peaked with the third album Follow the Leader from 1998. Since its inception, ten albums, 27 singles and a best-of compilation have been released. Each of the albums achieved platinum status .

Davis is the band's lead singer , but also plays the bagpipes and drums on the fourth studio album, Issues . At the age of twelve he had already mastered nine instruments, including the clarinet , violin and piano . He mostly writes his songs with the guitar , but also other instruments, e.g. B. Glass harmonica .

Private life

As a child, Davis suffered from severe asthma and was hospitalized frequently. A severe attack almost killed him, but he says it is much better now. He can "freak out" without the fear of dying.

Jonathan Davis married his high school girlfriend in 1998, and they had a child. This marriage was divorced again in 2001 . In 2004 Davis married a former porn actress who became known under her pseudonym Deven Davis . She gave birth to two children in 2005 and 2007.

Deven Davis passed away in August 2018 at the age of 39.

illness

Jonathan Davis (2006)

In 2006, shortly before appearing at the Download Festival , Davis was taken to the hospital and the doctors ordered him to take a few weeks off. It was later announced that the disease was idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and that his life was in acute danger.

The remaining Korn members then shortened their appearance and replaced Davis with singers from other bands who were supposed to play at the festival, including Corey Taylor from Slipknot , M. Shadows from Avenged Sevenfold and Matthew Heafy from Trivium .

music

Davis composed the complete score for Queen of the Damned with Richard Gibbs . Musicians from bands such as Slipknot , Disturbed , Static-X , Orgy and Linkin Park were involved in the project. Davis also has a small role in the film himself; he tries to sell the film character Jesse tickets on the way to the concert in Death Valley.

On May 25, 2018 Davis released Black Labyrinth, his first solo album on Sumerian Records .

  • In the same interview, Davis mentioned that he was planning an opera with horror writer Clive Barker and film music composer Richard Gibbs. The title of the opera is "Oblivion" and deals with the end of the world, but the opera should neither be particularly dark nor the music of Korn, played on an opera stage.
  • He sang the theme song for the survival horror video game Silent Hill: Downpour .
