Static-X is an American alternative metal - band from Los Angeles , California . It was founded in 1994 by Wayne Static and Ken Jay under the name Deep Blue Dream .

history

The beginnings (1994–1999)

Wayne Static live 2007

In 1994 singer and guitarist Wayne Static and drummer Ken Jay met at a record store in Chicago , where Jay worked. At that time, Smashing Pumpkins singer Billy Corgan was also working in the business that introduced the two of them. Together they founded the gothic band Deep Blue Dream and moved to Los Angeles . There they went looking for another guitarist and a bassist. A little later, the Japanese Koichi Fukuda joined the band as guitarist and the bassist Tony Campos . The band renamed itself Static in 1996. A demo was published under this name in 1996 and 1997. In the same year the band was finally renamed Static-X and in 1998 released an EP of the same name that contains three tracks for the debut album. They signed a contract with Warner Bros. Records in February 1998 and began recording their debut album.

Wisconsin Death Trip (1999-2001)

The album was produced by Ulrich Wild, who had previously produced albums for Deftones and White Zombie and was also involved in the production of the three other Static X albums. On March 23, 1999, Wisconsin Death Trip was released . It ranked 107 on the US Billboard 200 and went platinum in 2001 for one million copies sold. In addition, the music video for the song Push It became very famous when it was perpetuated on the Mac OS 9 CD-ROM and cemented the band's popularity.

When they recorded the performance at Ozzfest 2000 and wanted to publish it as a music DVD, they came into conflict with organizer Sharon Osbourne , who for legal reasons did not consent to the publication of the material and threatened to bring Static-X to court. The DVD was therefore only unofficially released in a limited edition under the name Where the Hell Are We and What Day Is It… This Is Static-X . In 2000 they also unofficially released The Death Trip Contiunues , an EP that contains three tracks that did not make it to the debut.

Machine and Shadow Zone (2001-2004)

While recording their second album Machine , longtime guitarist and keyboardist Koichi Fukuda left the band because he wanted to spend more time with his family. He was replaced a short time later by Tripp Eisen , who had previously played for dope . The album was released on May 22, 2001, ranked 11th in the US and was awarded gold. In 2002, Static was asked by Korn singer Jonathan Davis if he would like to contribute to a soundtrack. Static confirmed and recorded the song Not Meant for Me for the film Queen of the Damned . Also members were of the project Linkin Park and Disturbed involved. Static-X also made a joint contribution to the film music by including the song Cold from the album Machine on the accompanying sampler. The accompanying music video contains scenes from the film.

In early 2003, the recordings for a new album began. Shortly afterwards, co-founder Kan Jay also left to help Godhead . So it came about that the album was recorded with studio drummer Josh Freese . After the recordings, Nick Oshiro joined Static-X as a drummer, who previously played for Seether . Shadow Zone was released on October 7, 2003. Then they went on tour in the support act of Staind in the USA, as well as with Fear Factory and Korn in Australia. Shadow Zone was in the German charts for the first time. It was ranked 79th in the US, the album made it to number 20. The song Skinneyman from the album Shadow Zone was part of the soundtrack of the 2005 game Need for Speed Most Wanted .

Beneath… Between… Beyond… , Start A War and Eisens Imhaftung (2004–2006)

In 2004 the collection Beneath… Between… Beyond… was published . It contains several remixes and demos, as well as the complete EP The Death Continues , which was only released unofficially. It also contains two newly recorded songs, Breathe and Deliever Me , which represent Oshiro's first contribution to Static-X.

Koichi Fukuda, who returned in 2005, at a concert in 2009

At the beginning of 2005 they started to record a new album. Shortly before the release of Start A War , guitarist Tripp Eisen was arrested on suspicion of sexual abuse of a minor. He was initially released on bail, but fled shortly afterwards. He was thus sentenced to one year in prison but was released early on October 7, 2005. However, Static-X separated from him because he was no longer acceptable due to the allegations. His successor was his predecessor Koichi Fukuda. Start A War was released on June 14, 2005. This was followed by a tour with American Head Charge , Bloodsimple and Ill Niño .

Cannibal and Cannibal Killers Live (2006-2008)

2006 one dissolved the contract with Warner Bros. and came under with Reprise Records . They no longer worked with Ulrich Wild, who had worked on the first four albums. The new producer was John Travis. On April 27, 2007, Static-X released their fifth album Cannibal . It placed eighth on the US rock charts. It is also the first album since Wisconsin Death Trip in which original guitarist Koichi Fukuda was completely involved in the recording again. On April 6th, the music video for the single Destroyer was shown at the MTV Headbangers Ball . At the beginning of April, Nick Oshiro broke a hand, so that he had to be replaced by a session drummer at the start of the tour. During the "Cannibal Killers Tour" 2007 Static met the porn actress Tera Wray. So it happened that the two of them married in Las Vegas in early 2008 .

On October 7, 2008, the band released the first live album Cannibal Killers Live , which shows the full performance in Spokane , Washington . The concert took place on June 2, 2007 and is available on CD and DVD in one. In the USA there was also another DVD showing an appearance in Los Angeles in 1997.

Cult of Static (2008-2010)

Shortly after the wedding of Static and Wray, in January 2008, preparations began for Static-X's sixth album. Later that year, the soundtrack for the film Punisher: War Zone with the title Lunatic was released . The song is the later opener of the album. The song's first guitar solo comes from Megadeth singer Dave Mustaine , who is a longtime friend of Static. Cult Of Static was released on March 17th, 2009. Like its predecessor Cannibal, it was produced by John Travis and is the second album on Reprise Records. Static dedicated it to his wife, who can be heard in the background of some songs (e.g. Tera-Fied and Grind 2 Halt ). He also dedicated the single Stingwray (a trunk word from Stingray and Tera Wray) to his wife. It placed 16th on the Billboard 200, making it the highest-ranked album since Machine .

Campos' exit and Statics solo album (2010-2012)

In early 2010 it was announced that bassist Tony Campos had left the band and also said that the band's future was uncertain. The reasons for leaving Campos have not yet been fully clarified. Wayne Static said that Campos would be jealous because he had "the hottest woman in the world". The Mexican American was next to the Static Dato only member of the original cast, which had been continuously doing. Static used the longer break of his band to record his solo album, which was announced years ago. He signed a contract with Dirthouse Records and recorded the entire album on his own. The album, entitled Pighammer , was released on October 4, 2011. The first single Assassins of Youth was released on September 20th.

Comeback, line-up change and final dissolution (2012-2013)

When Static had finished the tour for his album in 2012, he confirmed that he was ready for Static-X again. On the band's Facebook page, he announced the “Noise Revolution Tour 2012”, which lasted from August 15th to October 17th. However, neither Fukuda nor Oshiro agreed to help Static, which is why he went on tour with his solo band under the band name. At times there were rumors that Tony Campos, who dropped out in 2010, would be back. However, he said that he was not interested in helping Static. Nevertheless, he wanted to support his ex-colleagues with the help of the fans to become part of the band again. On September 1st it was announced that bassist Brent Ashley had left the band and was replaced by Andy Cole. For the coming year Static also considered it possible to record and release a new album.

At the beginning of 2013 Static announced the "Wisconsin Death Tour", on which the debut album Wisconsin Death Trip should be performed for the first time in full. However, he got into a dispute over the naming rights with ex-bassist Campos, so he was forced to finally break up the band. Static is not interested in starting the band again, unless Campos would "return remorsefully one day".

“The deal is off, STATIC-X is off. The End. STATIC-X never again. In the last email Tony sent me, he wrote that hopefully we never have to talk to each other again. And I replied, 'Believe me, this is the last time you will hear from me.' And so we parted. Totally corrosive. I find it sad that things have to end this way. "

- Wayne Static : at The Gauntlet about the breakup

On November 1, 2014, it was announced that Wayne Static had died in his sleep at the age of 48. After his death report, Tony Campos and Koichi Fukuda publicly regretted that the band parted ways in an argument and that a reconciliation no longer took place.

The original band members reunite with Wayne Static (2018)

Guitarist Koichi Fukuda, bassist Tony Campos and drummer Ken Jay have announced the new album PROJECT REGENERATION for spring 2019. It will be produced again by Ulrich Wild. Old vocals by Wayne Static to be used, and there will be many guest singers on the album, including David Draiman of Disturbed , Ivan Moody of Five Finger Death Punch and Burton C. Bell of Fear Factory . Tony Campos comments on the new album as follows:

“PROJECT REGENERATION, we have a lot of material to work with ... various demos that Wayne left behind and some really great isolated vocals from almost finished songs. Together we wrote and put together something very special. We assume that the album will contain between 12 and 15 new Static-X songs. The original members got back together for all the right reasons. We are so grateful to have such loyal fans who miss the band and Wayne. And I know Wayne would appreciate all the passion and effort we put into this project. I had some very warm conversations with Wayne's family about it. They were very touched by the amount of love and effort we put into this new album. And they gave us their full support. To have the blessings of Wayne's family means the world to us! I know in my heart that Wayne would be very proud! "
