Dope is an alternative metal / nu-metal band that was formed in New York in 1997 .
history
Edsel Dope, the lead singer / song writer , formed the band. As a child, he and his brother, Simon Dope, were separated when their parents divorced. As adults they met again and Simon joined Edsel's band as a keyboardist. The two then brought Acey Slade into the band as bassist, Preston Nash as drummer and Sloane Jentry as guitarist.
Their first album was Felons and Revolutionaries , which the band released themselves in 1999 and which was still heavily influenced by industrial metal of the 1990s. Despite its Epic Records imprint, the album was later re-released by Sony. After the following tour, Edsel and his brother changed the band's line-up and recorded Life , which shows the musical turn towards alternative metal . Upon its release, Simon Dope left the group to pursue a career as a video game producer. Disappointed with the poor marketing by Epic Records, the band left the label and produced Group Therapy with a different line-up. It was released by Artemis Records . One song from the album, Today Is the Day , served as the official song for the WWE- organized pay-per-view event No Mercy in October 2003. Since then, the line-up has changed again.
Dope was also very often played as background music for Extreme Championship wrestling shows , and Debonaire was even the theme music for previous WWE events, Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) , and current all-nonstop action wrestling star Terry Gerin (Rhino ). This song was also played in the movie The Fast and the Furious . The song Always was used in the trailer for the Malaysian MMORPG Risk Your Life .
Dope has a large following in Japan too. When the band decided to go there and tour they weren't exactly welcomed. They were hated by the older Japanese for making "bad" music. Campaigns were even set up against them: “No Dope in Japan!” However, none of these campaigns against this supposedly evil band was successful and Dope went on the successful Japan tour (2005).
Dope has toured with bands like Pigface , Mushroomhead , Motograter , Twisted Method , Manntis , Socialburn , Static-X and Saliva .
After long difficulties with their record label Koch Records, Dopes album No Regrets was released on March 10, 2009. The first single Addiction was released on February 5th . In 2013 it became known that dope guitarist "Virus" is currently working with Disturbed frontman David Draiman on his new project called Device .
