Device was an American metal band formed in 2012 by Disturbed singer David Draiman and Geno Lenardo, the former guitarist of Filter . The band released a self-titled album in 2013.
history
At the end of 2011, the metal band Disturbed and lead singer David Draiman announced that they would be taking an indefinite break. At the same time the former worked Filter guitarist Geno Lenardo on some contributions to the soundtrack of the film Underworld: Awakening (2012). Draiman was very interested in Lenardo's music and teamed up with him on a joint project.
As of June 2012, she worked on the same debut album of device that ultimately on April 9, 2013 via Warner Bros. appeared. For the album, Draiman and Lenardo invited numerous prominent guest musicians such as Geezer Butler ( Black Sabbath ), Serj Tankian ( System of a Down ), M. Shadows ( Avenged Sevenfold ) and Tom Morello ( Rage Against the Machine ). When Lita Ford - / Ozzy Osbourne -cover "Close My Eyes Forever " is Lzzy Hale of Halestorm heard.
While Lenardo did not want to perform live with Device, Draiman was supported at concerts by Evanescence drummer Will Hunt and the dope guitarist Virus. At the Loudwire Music Awards 2013 , Device was recognized in the “Best New Artist ” category. In March 2016, David Draiman ruled out another studio album from Device.
Style and reception
Draiman himself emphasizes influences of early industrial rock bands like Nine Inch Nails or Ministry , which would have significantly led to the " futuristic rock" of Device.
The debut album met with divided criticism from reviewers. Matthias Weckmann was surprised by the Metal Hammer that Device is so close to the main band of the singer Disturbed . Fans could "strike blind and deaf", the announced industrial orientation can only be felt subliminally. The guest musicians also provided variety.
Marc Halupczok , also editor at Metal Hammer , however, considers the band's first release to be dispensable. So he judged that the “washed-out riffing, sometimes underlaid with a subtle plucking, […] is neither fish nor meat […] and […] after a few minutes it is just [annoying]. They never go below a certain level, but on a Disturbed record these tracks would have been average at best ”.
Sascha Krüger from Visions rated the album with five out of twelve possible points and criticized, among other things, that "Draiman does not abandon his hyper-theatrical puking behavior, which has already robbed Disturbed of all credibility" and the refrains "more to Meat Loaf than of Trent Reznor ”.
