Avenged Sevenfold , also known as A7X , is an American metal band from Huntington Beach , California . In the USA alone, the band sold around 18 million records and around 27 million worldwide. They have been called the "new heavy metal gods" by the music magazine Rolling Stone .

history

Founding and Sounding the Seventh Trumpet (1999–2002)

Avenged Sevenfold was founded in 1999 by M. Shadows , Zacky Vengeance, The Rev and Matt Wendt in California. Although the band is not religious, the name created by M. Shadows is an adaptation from the biblical story of Cain and Abel . There a line reads " [...] every murderer of Cain - he will be avenged sevenfold " (in English: " [...] whomever doth slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. "). As Zacky V. states on the All Excess DVD, Lips of Deceit was also a suggested name. The band members also appear under nicknames that they have all had since their school days.

First a demo was recorded in 1999 and 2000. Matt Wendt left the band shortly afterwards and was replaced by Justin Sane. With him, the band recorded their debut album Sounding the Seventh Trumpet , which was released in 2001 on Good Life Recordings . At the time of recording, the band members were only 18 years old and were still in high school. In the same year they released the warmness on the soul - EP , can be heard on the first Synyster Gates. He joined the band in late 1999. Justin Sane was released from the band shortly afterwards due to a suicide attempt and replaced by Dameon Ash. With Synyster Gates as lead guitarist, the band re-recorded To End the Rapture and re- released their debut album in 2002, Hopeless Records .

First successes and Waking the Fallen (2002-2004)

M. Shadows at Nova Rock 2014

With Johnny Christ on bass, Avenged Sevenfold recorded their second album called Waking the Fallen . At this point they were already receiving attention in the scene and were playing on the Take Action Tour with Mushroomhead and Shadows Fall , among others . In 2003, Waking the Fallen finally appeared on Hopeless Records , but the band switched to Warner Music Group (WMG) shortly afterwards . A year later they released their first music video for the song Warmness on the Soul and took part in several tours, including the Vans Warped Tour .

Style break on City of Evil (2005-2006)

Their third album, City of Evil , was released in 2005 and for the first time has a more classic heavy metal sound compared to the earlier metalcore albums . M. Shadows decided even before the recording of the second album that he wanted to use less guttural vocals on Waking the Fallen and on the following album, City of Evil, no more guttural vocals . Contrary to the frequent claim that Shadows can no longer “scream” due to a vocal cord injury, this is confirmed by the band's manager on their DVD All Excess . At the MTV Video Music Awards 2006 Avenged Sevenfold won an award for their video "Bat Country" for "Best New Artists in a Video". After that, the band announced that they would start writing new songs.

Avenged Sevenfold (2007-2009)

Zack Vengeance and Synyster Gates at Nova Rock 2014

The fourth album is called Avenged Sevenfold and was released on October 30, 2007 on the American label Warner Brothers , in Germany four days earlier. As with the previous album, the band in Avenged Sevenfold moves away completely from the metalcore genre. The reef structures in "Almost Easy", "Critical Acclaim" or "Scream", for example, are comparable to those of Heavy Metal . Overall, the album is mostly assigned to hard rock.

The Death of Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan (2009)

Drummer The Rev died on December 28, 2009 at the age of 28. His body was found in his California home. External interference was considered unlikely by the police. It wasn't until June 2010 that it was revealed that Sullivan had died of an overdose of prescription drugs and alcohol . He had taken oxymorphone and oxycodone , two pain relievers, diazepam and nordazepam , anti-anxiety drugs, and alcohol. He also suffered from cardiomegaly , an enlargement of the heart. Jimmy Sullivan was buried on January 6, 2010, in addition to the family and members of Avenged Sevenfold, Matt Tuck from Bullet for My Valentine , former Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul and some members of Buckcherry and My Chemical Romance . The eulogy was given by bandmate and best friend Synyster Gates .

Nightmare (2010)

Johnny Christ at Nova Rock 2014

On February 17, 2010, the band announced that they had resumed recordings on their fifth album. The recordings were continued with Mike Portnoy , then still the drummer of the band Dream Theater and role model for the late Sullivan. The album, which was released on July 27, 2010, was dedicated to him. Sullivan himself can be heard on the new album, as individual recordings were made before his death. On May 18, 2010 the title track "Nightmare" was released as a single. The video for the single was released almost two months later on July 17, 2010. Due to a label change in Germany, the sixth studio album, "Nightmare", which was announced for July 23, was only released on August 27, 2010. Shortly before the album was released, the Band with a promo tour that also took them through Europe. Concerts in Munich , Cologne and Hamburg were planned for Germany . The former was canceled shortly before the beginning of the band due to an illness within the band.

Touring and creative break (2011-2012)

The band concluded their successful world tour with a concert in Iraq for the troops of the American military stationed there. For 2011 they announced the Nightmare After Christmas tour, which would take place without Mike Portnoy. He announced his departure from the band on December 16, 2010. On January 13th it was announced that Avenged Sevenfold will also perform at Rock am Ring and Rock im Park . This was the first appearance within Germany with a new drummer. This is called Arin Ilejay and was introduced by the band on January 20, 2011 as the successor to The Rev.

On May 3, 2011, the band announced on their website that the new single "Not Ready to Die" will be the theme song for the new Call of Duty: Black Ops DLC Escalation. A week later they also released the music video for the song So Far Away , which revolves around The Rev and shows, among other things, previously unpublished pictures and video recordings of it. On May 17th, the band announced that they would also headline the 2011 Rockstar Uproar Tour. An Australia tour is also planned. On this occasion, an exclusive Australian Tour Edition of the Nightmare album will be available for purchase from July 22nd . In addition to the album, this bundle includes the DVD Live in the LBC and the Diamonds-in-the-Rough album. In an interview, Shadows announced some plans for the future. The band intends to take a break after the current rock star uproar tour and then start writing new songs. The current tour is also a good way to see if Arin can cope with tour life. Arin is said to be the drummer of the band on the next album as well. This is to ensure that the members also fit together well in the studio.

In April 2012 the band announced in an interview that they were working on another DVD. Various appearances were recorded on the tour through Asia. On September 24th of the year the song Carry On was released, which is played in the game Call of Duty: Black Ops II after the conclusion of the story at a computer-animated concert.

Hail to the King (2013)

On April 14, 2013, the band announced that a new album would be released. For the album, the band announced that their style has evolved and that the album will be much more rhythmic and generally long extended riffs dominate the pieces. A European tour with Device and Five Finger Death Punch is planned for November for this album . On June 27 of that year, a scavenger hunt revealed the album's name and release date. It's called "Hail to the King" and was released on August 23, 2013 in Germany and four days later in America.

On August 26th, Waking the Fallen: Resurrected , a remixed edition of the 2004 album, was released. A little later, on October 16, 2014, "Hail to the King: Deathbat", which had been in development for two years, was released for Android and Apple products. In a Reddit AMA on the same day, lead singer M. Shadows also announced that no album will be released in the coming year and that a DVD entitled "This Is Bat Country" is being worked on. However, a short worldwide tour is planned for 2015.

The Stage (October 2016)

The band toured Asia in January 2015 to visit countries where they had not previously performed.

The band gave three concerts in July 2015 and then retired to the studio to record the seventh album, which was released on October 28, 2016 under the name The Stage.

On July 23, 2015, Avenged Sevenfold announced that it had split up with drummer Arin Ilejay. In November of that year, Brooks Wackerman , the former Bad Religion drummer, was confirmed as Arin's successor.
