biography
Brian Elwin Haner Jr. studied jazz and classical guitar at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood , California . Musically, Gates was mainly influenced by Django Reinhardt and Dimebag Darrell .
After about a year he received a call from " The Rev ", the then (now deceased) drummer of the band Avenged Sevenfold , asking if he would like to join them as lead guitarist. He joined them and stopped his further training as a studio musician . Henceforth, he began teaching himself by reading books and watching music videos. On his first visit to the studio with the new band, the song To End the Rapture from the first album was recorded in a heavy metal version. This track eventually appeared on the album Sounding the Seventh Trumpet (2001).
Gates has won numerous awards to date, including being named “Young Shredder” of 2006 by the music magazine Metal Hammer and Guitarist of the Year 2006 by the music magazine “Total Guitar”.
In 2006 he also recorded the song "The River" with M. Shadows and Good Charlotte , which appeared on Good Charlotte's album Good Morning Revival .
Gates wrote the song "So Far Away" in homage to his friend The Rev, who died on December 28, 2009 of a drug overdose .
Gates has been married to Michelle Haner (DiBenedetto) since 2010.
stage name
On the DVD All Excess (2007), Gates claims that his stage name came about while driving drunk through a park with The Rev.
