Matthew Charles Sanders (born July 31, 1981 in Fountain Valley , California ), better known by his stage name M. Shadows , is the singer , songwriter and founding member of the American heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold . Shadows has a tenor voice and is known for his dark singing style and occasional screaming , but also melodic singing.
Life
M. Shadows learned guitar and piano as a teenager . He combines his early musical experience with the piano as an important factor in developing his skills with the guitar and his voice. He attended Huntington Beach High School, where he played for a short time in the punk band Successful Failure and then began to sing. In 1999, Shadows founded Avenged Sevenfold with high school friends Zacky Vengeance, The Rev, and Matt Wendt. In 2000 The Rev brought Synyster Gates to join the band as lead guitarist.
stage name
Shadows, like the other members of Avenged Sevenfold, uses a stage name. In an interview, he said that he chose M. Shadows because he was considered the "dark character of the band". The M stands for his first name, Matthew. He said M. Shadows sounded better than just Shadows . He also added that he and his band used stage names because many other successful musicians who influenced them use stage names (e.g. Slash from Guns N 'Roses and Munky from Korn ).
Influences
Shadows sees his singing and playing culture strongly influenced by classic metal bands. He names Guns N 'Roses as his biggest influence (in an interview), “I love this band! They're a big reason I'm in a band and I write music myself. ”Shadows also commented that he was heavily influenced by Metallica , Megadeth , Slayer , Iron Maiden , Ozzy Osbourne , Queen and Pantera .

Shadows has appeared on numerous albums by various artists. He can be heard on the Steel Panther album Feel the Steel and sings a verse from Turn Out the Lights . He also produced The Confessions album from 2007, Requiem . Shadows sings in The River by Good Charlotte on the album Good Morning Revival together with other band members. Synyster Gates played the guitar solo on the song .
In 2012, Shadows and Avenged Sevenfold colleague Synyster Gates had a brief cameo in the first person shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops II , in which they provided their voices. Shadows Band also produced some music tracks for the game. Shadows also sang Nothing to Say on Slash's solo album.
Private
M. Shadows has been married to Valary DiBenedetto since October 17, 2009. The couple have two children. Their first son River Sanders was born on July 8, 2012. Their second son, Cash Sanders, was born in mid-2014. Shadows lives in Long Beach with his family .
