Steel Panther is an American glam metal - band from Los Angeles , 2000 by Ralph Saenz (Michael Starr, vocals), Russ Parrish (Satchel, guitar), Travis Haley (Lexxi Foxx, bass) and Darren Leader (Stix Zadinia , Drums) and has been under contract with Universal Records since 2008 .

In terms of appearance and music, the group strongly cites hair metal and sleaze rock of the 1980s. They move between parody , homage and adoration . The occasional classification as Fun Metal is due to the clichéd attitude as well as the ironic texts, which mainly deal with sex, women and drug use.

history

Origins

Singer Ralph Saenz (* 1965) from Chicago , alias Michael Starr, was active with the Orange County band Nightfall from 1987 . However, the group never made it to a record deal, and the band's greatest success was a contribution to a compilation published by metal radio station KNAC. His participation in the band 7% Solution , with Mitch Perry (previously with Steeler , MSG and Talas) on the electric guitar then appeared more promising . But by 1993 the heyday of glam metal and hard rock was long over and no record company showed any interest. From 1994 he was involved in the Van Halen tribute band Atomic Punks (until 2008). In 1996 Saenz sang the EP Wasted for the LA Guns , which was the only guest appearance for the formation. Appearances with the Atomic Punks turned out to be quite successful, so that in 2000 Saenz even turned down an offer from the band Ratt to replace Stephen Pearcy, who had just left the group, on the microphone. Even David Lee Roth mentions the Atomic Punks very benevolent in his autobiography Crazy from the Heat . 2001 Saenz had a guest appearance in the movie Rock Star , directed by Stephen Herek and starring Mark Wahlberg .

Singer Michael Starr (2008)

In 2000 he also co-founded Metal Shop as a Hair Metal cover band. Through Perfect World Entertainment , the company of the former Roxanne singer Jamie Brown, he came into contact with Darren Leader (* 1969) and Russ Parrish (* 1970), later known under their pseudonyms Stix Zadinia and Satchel. Parrish was considered an ambitious and talented guitarist at an early age and attended the renowned Musicians Institute in Los Angeles from the end of the eighties , where he was a student of Paul Gilbert ( Racer X , Mr. Big ). In an interview, the guitarist mentioned that he developed his style by listening to Van Halen's songs a thousand times over . He names guitarist Edward Van Halen as an important influence and one of the most important musicians of all time. With his friend and mentor Gilbert, with whom Parrish temporarily shared an apartment in Los Angeles, and the singer Jeff Martin, he founded the cover trio The Electric Fence . The only official release, however, was limited to a song for a Jeff Beck tribute album in 1996. With Jeff Martin he also played in the band Bad Dog , which managed to get a contract with Atlantic Records , but broke up after a few concerts . In addition, Satchel played from 1993 with War & Peace , a band that was founded by Jeff Pilson , the former bassist of the band Dokken , and also with Fight , founded by Judas Priest front man Rob Halford . Other smaller musical engagements followed, for example with the power pop formation Outta the Blue , from 1995 with Kevin Gilbert and the band The Ducks , later renamed The Thornbirds . In the latter he was active with Darren Leader, who later became the drummer of Steel Panther.

From Metal Shop to Steel Panther

In 2000, singer Saenz, guitarist Parrish, drummer leader and bassist Travis Haley launched Metal Shop . Right from the start, the concept included not only covering well-known Hair Metal hits, but also parodying the corresponding bands, paired with clichéd appearance and comedy elements. "Spinal tap on cocaine, with musicians who can really play," as Saenz described it.

According to the band's own mythology, the formation has existed since 1988, too late to be successful. Singer Michael Starr later said: “When grunge superseded metal in the early nineties, we didn't cut our hair and didn't become alternative types. We continued to do heavy metal consistently. We only survived by playing cover versions, because no record company wanted to offer us a contract during that time. For years we played songs by Guns N'Roses and Mötley Crüe in many sold-out clubs. When our successes got bigger and bigger, we decided to write our own songs. "

In another conversation Starr said regretfully: “In the nineties, heavy metal disappeared. Nirvana, Pearl Jam and the other grunge bands drove him out. Kurt Cobain shot himself shortly afterwards because he could no longer stand his own music. All of our friends in Hollywood cut their hair and played alternative or grunge. Only we still proudly wore spandex and kept rocking. "

Guitarist Satchel (Live, 2009)

At the beginning of their career, the formation made weekly appearances in the Viper Room , then owned by Johnny Depp , and they quickly achieved promising success and an increasing, initially local, popularity. They were hired for a Discover Card television commercial in which they appeared under the name Danger Kitty and followed weekly appearances in the Key Club . Still under Metal Shop , they released their first song, Love Rocket , in 2002 and, a year later, self-distributed their debut album, Hole Patrol . This already contained songs that were later re-recorded under Steel Panther. The songs Death to all but Metal , which found their way to compilations, as well as the cover Fantasy by the musician Aldo Nova , which was used as the theme song for an MTV television series with Rob Dyrdek ( Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory ), received special attention . The cover of the album was deliberately based on Look What the Cat Dragged In by Poison .

This was followed by a break with the company Perfect World Entertainment . However, since this holds the naming rights to Metal Shop and Danger Kitty , the group had to be renamed Metal Skool . The new pseudonyms were also created, while the names Michael Diamond, Rikki Ratchet, Armando Lbs and Ginger Roxx were previously used.

The band won the Best Tribute Band in the Universe competition , after which the band became one of the most popular cover bands in California . A rapidly increasing popularity, especially in California, was the result, so that in the following years there were often prominent personalities like Criss Angel , Kenny Loggins , Paul Stanley , Corey Taylor , Drew Carey , Chad Kroeger , Jerry Cantrell , Justin Hawkins , Kelly Clarkson , Phil Anselmo , Billy Ray Cyrus , Tom Morello , David Bryan , Pink , Vince Neil and Avril Lavigne have performed with the band at concerts.

Hole Patrol was re-released under Metal Skool in 2005, additionally with an Ian Hunter cover that was recorded for the sitcom Drew Carey Show , where the band had a guest appearance. Another followed in 2007 in the Las Vegas series .

In 2008 Saenz and Parrish ended their involvement with the Atomic Punks , which existed in parallel for years, in order to be able to concentrate fully on their main band, which from then on bears the name Steel Panther. In the same year they signed a contract with Republic Records under Universal Records . The first single under the new band name was a newly recorded version of Death to all but Metal and a music video in 2009 .

Feel the steel

In the summer of 2009 they finally released the album Feel the Steel , which reached number 98 on the US Billboard charts. In 2010 this album was also up for a possible nomination for a Grammy for Best Comedy Album . Despite increasing success with their own material, Steel Panther still played their appearances as a cover band on the Sunset Strip and in Las Vegas .

Bassist Lexxi Foxx (Live, 2009)

In Europe, Steel Panthers first gained popularity in England and soon also in Germany. Both musically and in appearance, however, Steel Panther split the audience. Some see the band as a successful parody of 80s hair metal, others see it as a mere attempt to quote the poser acts of the time and as artificial. The first Steel Panther tour through Germany followed in September 2010, with only four dates in Cologne, Munich, Berlin and Hamburg.

This album already received very favorable reviews. Justin Crafton praised it with "stellar musicianship, amazing vocals, lyrics any rocker whose heyday was in the 1980's wished they wrote and top-notch production make this album my pick, hands down, for the 'best album of 2009"

In the course of the Feel the Steel album release in Germany, Michael Starr explained: “When you listen to rap or hip hop, it's also about getting high and about horny women. But this music just sucks. And all other genres of music are all about problems and big feelings. I want to hear about hot parties and hot women! I don't want to hear about the problems that I have every day anyway, but about the great time I would like to have. I like to sing along. And the girls love it too. At Death Metal concerts, which are all about death and violence, there are hardly any girls in the audience. You won't get a pussy for the evening. "

Balls out

During a tour in the UK in 2011 they already played new material and announced the next studio album for October. This then appeared under the title Balls Out and reached number 40 on the US Billboard charts. The German music magazine Metal Hammer named it album of the month. At the end of 2011 a concert tour followed through Great Britain, where they played as the opening act for Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe . In addition to their homeland of California, Steel Panther celebrated successes in 2012, particularly in Great Britain and Germany.

The fact that in early 2012 the band's posters had to be removed from public walls in England led to controversy. These showed the frivolous cover of the balls-out album, on which a half-naked woman holds love balls between her legs.

Thematically, the album offered the usual mix of sex and drug use. About sex-obsessed aliens ( Supersonic Sex Machine ), the imitative antics of Tiger Woods ( Just Like Tiger Woods ) or sex with 17 women in a row ( 17 Girls in a Row ). When song It Will not Suck Itself seemed Nuno Bettencourt and Chad Kroeger as a guest musician with. Only the Japanese version of the album contained the song Handicapped Slut , which seemed too sensitive to be released in the US.

In the German music magazine Rock Hard , editor Andreas Himmelstein praised the album: “With this first-class guitar work, the fat sound and the talent of the almost perfect songwriting, Steel Panthers would have been in the US sleaze metal and hard rock scene in the second half of the eighties In terms of success, he undoubtedly played at the forefront. ”He can understand that infantile humor divides minds, but he recognizes the deliberate, clichéd parody in it.

The FHM praised Balls Out as a “politically incorrect stroke of genius” and added that the term “parody” for the album was taken ad absurdum, since it was not only “lyrically snotty”, but also “technically perfect”. In the course of the album release, Steel Panther also did an extensive tour through Germany in autumn 2012, already in sold-out halls. Also in 2012 they released their first live DVD British Invasion with a concert at the Brixton Academy in London.

Stix Zadinia at Nova Rock 2014

The album Balls Out was placed on List A of the Federal Testing Agency for Media Harmful to Young People (BPJM) in Germany in September 2012 . This means that the album cannot be advertised or sold to anyone under the age of 18. The authority emphasizes that it recognizes the "overall parodic concept" and appreciates artistic freedom, since the artists "do not break their pose at any point" and thus "as omnipotent rock stars apparently spread generally valid theses about the treatment of women in a sexual context" , the potential of a socio-ethical disorientation of young people is given by the texts. The Federal Inspectorate mentions the song Critter as the main reason . She justifies this with the fact that “sexuality is described here as a pure relationship of dependency or as a means of making the partner submissive.” She adds: “The rougher and more degrading the dealings with the partner, the more docile and loyal she is to the man . The comparison with a reptile with anal penetration propagated at the same time is suitable for extremely degrading the image of women. "

In a conversation with Satchel, he was amused and ironically said that he saw it as a further incentive that further albums in Germany were indexed in the future. About the indexing and the responsible song Critter he also said: “Let me tell a story: I once knew a really nice boy who listened to our record during a Christmas dinner with his family. Then he jumped up and fucked his aunt in the ass in front of the assembled crew. So the board is right: things like this can happen. But of course you always have the choice of whether you want to unpack the prengel at a Christmas dinner or leave it alone. It's a matter of choice. Do I want to get this girl in the bum and shoot her right - or shouldn't I? If the girl is into it then the answer is clear. You just have to be able to correctly assess your counterpart. Some like that, others don't. "

All you can eat

In the spring of 2014, Steel Panther led the Spreading the Disease Tour in Europe , in Germany in invariably sold-out halls. They played new material from the upcoming album All You Can Eat for the first time . The pre-run PR tour also took them to Sat.1 breakfast television , where they performed an acoustic version of their new single Party Like Tomorrow is the End of the World live. Various celebrities such as Ron Jeremy , Steve-O , Chuck Liddell and RJ Mitte participated in the video .

Live at the Wacken Open Air (2014)

In April 2014, the fourth album All You Can Eat was finally released . In Germany it reached number 15 in the charts and in Austria it even reached number 13. Also in April, Glory Hole, another single with a music video, was released with the participation of porn actresses such as Nikki Hearts. The song deals with the sexual practice of the same name . For the song Gang Bang at the Old Folks Home played Vivian Campbell one a guitar solo. A song that is about group sex in a nursing home, which the band members, like all other songs, always claim to be autobiographical.

The Visions published two different reviews of the album. Britta Helm positively states that with the album Steel Panther “does not expose the over-the-top Glam Metal of the past” but rather the “uptight enlightenment of now” and expressly praises the humor and irony of the record. Markus Hockenbrink, on the other hand, describes the increasing signs of wear and tear in the “bum humor” that doesn't suit his taste. Markus Bellmann from Plattentests.de, on the other hand, writes of "borderline humor" that can be "a lot of fun". Whether the lyrics were "pure sexism or infantile to self-deprecating" should be "clarified" for him. In Metal Hammer, Dorian Gorr praised Steel Panther as “currently the best glam metal band”. The "sexually charged texts, with a big wink" are not only bearable for him, but would "simply make the listening pleasure more pleasant". Since the band knows their craft, they would "never degenerate into a final slap act".

The following All You Can Eat tour took the band to the Wacken Open Air and the Loreley Metalfest for the first time in the summer . In 2015 they also made a guest appearance in the video Road Trip by the duo Ninja Sex Party . In spring 2015 there was another tour through Europe, as well as the announcement later that he would play again at Wacken Open Air in 2016. In cooperation with the men's magazine Playboy , the band shot another, alternative music video for Party Like Tomorrow Is the End of the World in 2015 . This was playing Playmate Kim Phillips (US Miss September 2009) with. At the end of February 2016, Steel Panther released the acoustic live album Live from Lexxi's Mom's Garage . Also in 2016, Ray Luzier said he was the band's original drummer from the early days as a metal shop. He then left the band to work as a live drummer for David Lee Roth.

Lower the bar

On March 24, 2017, the band released their fifth studio album entitled Lower the Bar . A music video for the Cheap Trick cover She's Tight was released beforehand , in which Cheap Trick singer Robin Zander participated. The video for Poontang Boomerang was first presented on the porn site Pornhub . The album was released as a standard CD, a vinyl LP, a “Deluxe Edition” with two bonus songs and a lenticular cover , and an SHM CD . According to Satchel, the album title should express a philosophy of life: “Everyone should stick to it if they want to have a good time. It's about lowering expectations. Every guy always wants to rip open the hottest brides when they go out, but if you consciously pick one that isn't one of the biggest sweeps, you are likely to have more success and maybe even better sex. People always want to tell you to think big in order to succeed in life. I say: think small and be happy with what you have. "

On the music website metal.de, Michael Klaas praised it, one notices the band "a certain maturity in playing their music". The sound “pushes forward without getting tangled up in experiments”, the record “is fun”, even if “technically there is no overheat here”. Lyrically, the band is again "not holding back with sloppiness". She aims "with such vehemence below the belt and into the rump region" that it is "almost cute". How can you “take this band seriously let alone hate it?” You can get upset about the lyrics or just laugh about it, but Klaas praises the group's passion. In Metal Hammer , Mathias Mineur judges the album that the border to comedy is "thin as bread paper", but the "motley hair metal parody" is "anything but pure parody". The album convinces with “first-class rock numbers, of astonishingly robustness”, the production is “splendid” and the performance is “impeccable”. Lower the Bar is a "gorgeous rock album" that "rarely comes out".

On the occasion of the album's release, the Kronen Zeitung conducted an interview with the band, in which they reaffirmed how serious they see themselves as musicians, even after Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee , for example, said they were unflattering about Steel Panther and described it as "ridiculous fun- Band "and" Witz-Band ". According to Michael Starr, Mötley Crüe fans would be big fans of Steel Panther and both would take each other too seriously: “He (Sixx) thinks we're just kidding, like a stupid joke band that shouldn't play with them. All of their fans like us! ”Satchel told the Kronen Zeitung:“ Of course we were 20 years later than all the others. But we all wrote and write songs about parties and fucking. What is the difference between our song 'Party Like Tomorrow Is The End Of The World' and the Crüe number '10 Seconds To Love '? We might do it with a little more humor, but doesn't it matter? It is not okay to be called a parody band. We take the music really seriously and play every show as if it were the last. "

Robert Fröwein thinks that with their flat, "extremely sexualized texts that circumvent any political correctness", Steel Panthers thrust like "a spear into a hermetically sealed world of scandal-free order". “Self-proclaimed guardians of good taste” would target the band as well as “humor-resistant moral apostles for whom the band's biting and admittedly borderline irony is too much”. In the interview, Satchel said: “Especially in the Internet age, it's not just feminists who hate us. We love vaginas beyond measure and we don't give a shit what anyone thinks about them. We are definitely the most honest band in the whole rock'n'roll circus because we let our feelings run free. What should I do when a woman's tits are beautiful? Don't you praise it? A Steel Panther show is a safe haven for political inaccuracy. You can come to us and say whatever you want. We're on the right track, otherwise the fans wouldn't buy our albums and come to our shows. The haters always look for the same points anyway. "

The new studio album Heavy Metal Rules has been announced for September 27, 2019 , from which two music videos for songs from the album have already been released in advance.
