Rockstar is a Musikfilm- Drama by Stephen Herek from the year 2001 .

action

The film tells the story of the musician Chris Cole, who in the 1980s worked with little success as a service technician for photocopiers and in the evenings he was the lead singer of the tribute band “Blood Pollution”, who played pieces from the hair metal band “Steel Dragon”.

He has a relationship with Emily Poule, the manager of his band. When the singer of "Steel Dragon" is released, the band is looking for a successor. Cole, who has since been kicked out of his band, gets the job. Now he gets to know the wild life of sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll . His new life also breaks his relationship with Emily. He wants to get involved in the band with his own songs. The other musicians reject that. You see him only as a paid singer and not fully integrated into the band. In the end, Cole quits during a concert at Steel Dragon and devotes himself to his own songs. Now he can win Emily back too.

music

In the film, Jeff Scott Soto and Michael Matijevic lend their voices to actors Jason Flemyng and Mark Wahlberg. The soundtrack comes from well-known groups: KISS , AC / DC , Bon Jovi , Talking Heads and many others.

Reviews

  • In the Washington Post, Desson Thomson compared Mark Wahlberg's depiction to fireworks.
  • The lexicon of international films wrote that the film could “ never deliver the criticism aimed at of mass culture ” but reproduced “ its clichés ”.

Awards

"Rock Star" was nominated for the Golden Reel Award in 2002 for sound editing .

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.

background

The film was inspired by the story of Tim 'Ripper' Owens . Owens , a former singer in a Judas Priest cover band , replaced Rob Halford , who had left the band in 1997, as singer with Judas Priest .

Another parallel is the homosexuality of the former singer of the band Steel Dragon in the film. Halford openly professed his sexual orientation in 1998.

Metal God was initially planned as the film title, based on the song title of the same name "Metal Gods" by Judas Priest and the resulting nickname Halfords.

Production details

The drama was filmed primarily in Seattle , Los Angeles and Pittsburgh . It cost approximately $ 38 million to produce, compared to $ 17 million in US box office revenues.
