John Stockwell
John Stockwell (born March 25, 1961 in Galveston , Texas ), born John Stockwell Samuels IV , is an American film director , screenwriter , actor and former model.
Life
Stockwell was born to Ellen Richards and the lawyer John S. Samuels III. His older sister is the historian Evelyn Welch (* 1959; born as Evelyn Kathleen Samuels), who teaches at King's College London , and his niece is the musician Florence Welch (* 1986), singer of the rock band Florence + the Machine .
During his time as a model in the early 1980s, then under his name John Samuels , he was in a relationship with Bianca Jagger and the actress Barbara Allen, a muse of Andy Warhol . Between 1983 and 1985 he was in a relationship with actress Rae Dawn Chong , whom he met while on a set.
Stockwell has been married to the well-known restaurateur Helene Henderson since 1988 and has three children.
Career
Stockwell started his career as a model and worked a lot in Italy . During this time he made friends with the late Andy Warhol, who also mentioned him in his biography and for whom he was the model.
He had his first supporting role as an actor in 1981 in the film The Freaky Professor . From 1983 came leading and supporting roles in Die Aufreißer von der Highschool as Spider, in John Carpenter's film adaptation of Stephen King's horror classic Christine as Dennis Gulder and in 1985 in the comedy Future Project - The 4th Dimension as Michael Harlan. In the same year he played in City Limits ; an unsuccessful with critics and at the box office film was later in an episode of the American satire format Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) satirizes . In 1986 he played the "Cougar" in Top Gun - you fear neither death nor the devil at the side of Tom Cruise .
On television, he had guest roles in television series such as The Young Riders and Heirs of the Curse .
Stockwell later became more focused on working behind the camera and has since directed several films . Stockwell made his directorial debut in 1987 with Under Cover . This was followed by directorial work in 2000 in Cheaters , 2001 in Crazy / Beautiful , 2002 in Blue Crush , 2005 in Into the Blue , 2006 in Turistas , 2009 in Heart , 2014 in the Gina Carano film In the Blood and Cannabis Kid and 2016 in Kickboxer : Retribution , a remake of the 1989 martial arts film Karate Tiger 3 - The Kickboxer .
In addition to working in front of and behind the camera, Stockwell also writes scripts. He wrote his first screenplay in 1986 for Teuflische Klasse . This was followed by scripts for Cheaters in 2000, for the musical film Rock Star, made with Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston , in 2001, for Blue Crush in 2002 and for Cannabis Kid in 2014, which he also directed.
