action

A group of Americans, the siblings Alex and Bea and their best friend Amy, are backpackers in an omnibus in north-east Brazil . An accident suddenly ends the trip. In search of a replacement ride, the group is joined by the British tourists Finn and Liam and the Australian Pru. You happen to discover a bay with a beach bar near a village. Not knowing that the locals are up to something, they spend an intoxicating night on the beach with the Brazilians, dancing and drinking.

When the group woke up alone on the beach the next morning, all their belongings had been stolen and two people were missing. In the village, a young Brazilian, Kiko, offers to help them when they are looking for their belongings. Not knowing that they are trapping an organ trafficking ring , they follow the boy to a house in the middle of the jungle . There they are captured by a group of armed men. Dr. Zamora, the leader of the organ dealers, wants to take care of the foreigner in order to supply the city hospital in Rio with their organs. He sees this as a kind of balancing act so that not only impoverished residents become victims of organ traffickers.

His first victim is Amy, whose kidneys and liver he removes while the victim is fully conscious until she finally dies of the consequences of the operation. Meanwhile, the others manage to free themselves with the help of Kiko. During the escape into the jungle, first Finn and Liam, later also Kiko, are killed. In an underwater cave on a nearby lake, the decimated group is being led by Dr. Zamora and a companion finally confronted. A fight ensues in which Dr. Zamora is finally killed by his companion, an Indian. In an alternate ending, the group kills both pursuers.

At the end of the film, Alex, his sister Bea and Pru get on a plane that will take them back to civilization. They advise other travelers to take the plane, not the bus.

criticism

“It's exciting, the - here somewhat defused - hell trip by bikini film professional John Stockwell (“ Blue Crush ”,“ Into the Blue ”). A breathtaking hunt through underwater caves, in particular, gets your pulse racing. But the punch line critical of capitalism seems so artificial that the similar torture shocker “ hostel ” almost looks like a witty globalization satire. "

- Cinema.de

"Disgusting torture film in" Hostel "successor, which makes no secret of its basic xenophobic tendency and appeals to the lowest instincts."

- Film lexicon cable one

In Brazil, there were heated discussions after its release: the film would use a cliché and contain unrealistic scenes that exaggerated the danger of the country.
