Cheaters (alternative title on television: Die Mogler or High School Cheaters - Die Superfrüger ) is an American drama from 2000 . Directed by John Stockwell , who also wrote the script.

action

The action takes place in 1994. Dr. Gerard Plecki teaches English in a Chicago school. His students come from underprivileged sections of the population. Plecki chooses seven students to compete against a prestigious school. His students steal the tasks prepared by a state authority before the start. Since they are getting far better results than before, an investigation is launched to unmask the fraud.

Plecki renounces his job as a teacher. The title won is withdrawn from his students. The texts that appear at the end provide information about the further lives of those involved: Some of the students are studying, Plecki became a shop owner. The President of the School Inspectorate went to prison for tax evasion .

Reviews

David Nusair wrote on Reel Film Reviews that the director was energetic and the presentations were above average. The plot is gripping.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film, shot “according to real life” , “does not ask questions about morality or educational goals” , but rather feels “only obliged to its actually uninteresting story” .

Awards

John Stockwell was nominated for an Emmy Screenwriter in 2000 . Blake Heron was nominated for the YoungStar Award in 2000. The film was nominated for the 2001 Golden Satellite Award for Best Television Film. Eric A. Sears was nominated for an Eddie by the American Cinema Editors in 2001.

backgrounds

The plot is based on events from 1995. The team of the real Dr. Gerald Plecki of Steinmetz High School lost the Illinois Academic Decathlon State Championship to Whitney Young High School at the regional level, but won the championship against the same school. The team was later convicted by the State Decathlon Committee of Fraud.

The film was shot in Chicago and Toronto . Some of the exterior shots of the Chicago schools were done without permission.
