Blue Crush is an American surf film released in 2002 . The main character is the young underprivileged surfer Anne Marie Chadwick (played by Kate Bosworth ), who has the opportunity to break through to professional surfing in a surfing competition. To do this, however, she has to overcome her trauma from a surfing accident.

action

Anne Marie Chadwick lives in modest circumstances in Hawaii . She has to look after herself and her younger sister Penny because their mother recently disappeared to Las Vegas. Anne Marie is intelligent, but has neglected her school education in favor of her passion, surfing. She lives with her two like-minded friends Eden and Lena. The three work as chambermaids in a large hotel.

A surfing competition on the infamous North Shore is coming up, in which Anne Marie can hope, due to her talent, to attract enough attention to make the leap into professional surfing. However, the competition takes place in an area with difficult conditions, where Anne Marie had a surfing accident three years earlier. She was pressed against the rocky bottom of the sea by the waves and the current, hit her head and nearly drowned. Since then she has only surfed in private.

During their work as housekeeping, the three friends have to clean an extremely filthy room of some professional football players who are vacationing in a small group in Hawaii. Anne Marie confronts them about the dirty room and is then dismissed by the hotel management. However, their behavior caught the attention of quarterback Matt Tollman. This is much more serious than his uninhibited teammates. After seeing her surf, he approaches Anne Marie about private surfing lessons. Because of the very good remuneration, Anne Marie assumes that the two get closer during private surfing lessons and finally begin a romance. Anne Marie is now torn between her ambitious goals, her fear of another accident and the possibility of a long-term relationship with rich Matt.

At first her fear gains the upper hand, she wants to flee into romance. However, she quickly realizes that a romance would ultimately make her completely dependent on Matt's benevolence and financial contributions. She runs away but is found by Matt. It comes to the debate in which Anne Marie first decides to be independent and to participate in the surf competition.

The day of the surf competition is coming. Surfing takes place in duels in which the opponents paddle a little way into the sea and finally choose from the incoming waves which they want to use for surfing. The subsequent 'surfing' is graded by judges. Anne Marie is surfing with a female professional and is initially afraid, skipping several promising waves. Finally, she is encouraged by her opponent. On the first try, she comes dangerously close to repeating her traumatic surfing accident. Anne Marie fights her fear, she manages a 'perfect ride' in the next attempt.

Although she lost the duel due to the evaluation standards, she attracted enough attention to be approached by sponsors. Matt watched the competition as a spectator and congratulated them - a long-term relationship does not seem ruled out.

Reviews

“For a surfer film, surprisingly coherent, credible and entertaining. Summer is here."

"No question, a positive surprise."

"Blue Crush" is friendly, harmless and, unfortunately, completely irrelevant. Nothing about this film is really bad, but there isn't a scene, a single moment that is really memorable either. "
