The Young Riders (English title: 7 for justice ) was an American western series that was broadcast from 1989 to 1992.

overview

The action takes place in the US Dakota Territory around 1860. In the town of St. Joseph, the former Texas Ranger Teaspoon runs the post office of the Pony Express . For courier services he puts seven young Postreiter ( Young Riders a): a native of the southern states "Kid" who as a boy disguised Lou McCloud, the hot-headed James Butler Hickok , the silent Ike McSwain, the Half-Blood Buck Cross, the Black Noah Dixon and the fun-loving William Cody . On their often dangerous journeys, the Young Riders have to prove themselves on the one hand against villains typical of the genre such as robber gangs, marauding Indians, corrupt officials, etc., and on the other hand also deal with personal problems.

actor

  • Stephen Baldwin plays the historical character William Cody . In the series, Cody is a fun-loving daredevil.
  • Josh Brolin embodies James Butler Hickok , also a historical character. "Jimmy" is a hothead who often solves problems through spectacular handling of the Colt, and to his displeasure is increasingly challenged to duels.
  • Ty Miller plays "The Kid," a gentle southerner. Since the Civil War is imminent in the series , it is often offensive because of its origins.
  • Gregg Rainwater plays the half-breed Running Buck Cross, a child of a Kiowa mother who was raped by a white man. Buck, who is discriminated against by both whites and Indians, but also feels a part of both, is an excellent knife thrower.
  • Travis Fine plays Ike McSwain, who was seriously ill as a child and has been silent ever since. They have been best friends ever since Buck taught him sign language.
  • Don Franklin embodies Noah Dixon, an intelligent black man who often has to assert himself against racism.
  • Yvonne Suhor plays Louise McCloud, who first disguises herself as a boy because she fears that she will not be taken seriously otherwise. "Lou" once ran away from her father, who regularly beat her up.
  • Anthony Zerbe plays Aloysius "Teaspoon" Hunter, the quirky but assertive head of the post office in St. Joseph. For the young riders he is the surrogate father.

background

Of Young Riders three seasons were aired each with 21 episodes from 1989 to 1992. In Germany in 1991 the first season with 21 episodes was broadcast under the title 7 for justice on the first German television . Although many Western-typical action scenes consistently occurred, socially critical topics such as female equality (embodied by Lou McCloud), racism (Noah Dixon, Buck Cross), slavery in the USA (Noah Dixon, The Kid) or shootings were also used as "problem solving" ( Jimmy Hickok).

The makers of the film Young Guns (1988) charged Young Riders with plagiarism because they saw their copyright infringed by the similar subject.
