action

California in the 1960s: To finally lose their innocence, three high school friends Woody, Dave and Spider want to go to Tijuana , Mexico for the weekend . Inevitably, they also take Dave's little brother Wendell with them, as he has enough change to finance their company. On the way they stop at a supermarket, where the young saleswoman Kathy decides to leave her unfaithful husband. Without further ado, she jumps to Woody and the others in the car and drives them to Tijuana. While she is filing for divorce there, Dave drives through the streets with the others in his Chevrolet . The local sheriff becomes aware of them and drives after them. He forces her to stop in front of a workshop and have Dave's car repaired.

While Wendell stays with the car, Woody, Dave and Spider head out to have fun in Tijuana's entertainment district. In a strip club, three prostitutes immediately join them at the table. When they go to the brothel one floor up with the women, the pimp assigns them a group of less attractive whores. Woody chooses one of the older ones and goes to a room with her, but he is too shy and insecure to have sex with her. In the end, Spider also refrains from intercourse when his whore makes fun of him. Meanwhile, Kathy throws her wedding ring into a fountain. However, when three men fish for the ring in the water, she beats the men and takes the ring back. Then she also ends up in the strip club and sits down with Woody and Spider at the bar. When Spider is rude towards her, he and Woody get into an argument. After Spider hits him, Woody leaves the strip club and Kathy follows him.

On the street, Dave meets his brother Wendell, who has left the workshop and wants to buy fireworks. Dave, on the other hand, whose attempt to sleep with a whore also went wrong, wants to get an aphrodisiac from a pharmacy . Because the Mexican pharmacist does not understand him and chases him away with a rifle when he tries to make himself understood with sign language, Dave has the aphrodisiac obtained from a local instead. At a local festivity, he mixes a pill, which is just a headache pill, into a girl's drinking cup and hopes for a hot number. However, the girl's brother doesn't like it at all. He and his friends force Dave and Wendell into his car and drive them to a remote junkyard.

While Spider visits the bars after one of Tijuana's infamous shows, in which a donkey copulates with a woman, Woody and Kathy go to a motel. They become attracted to each other and start kissing. Soon after, however, they leave the motel without having slept together. In a taxi they follow the car of the sheriff who arrested Spider after a bar fight and is now taking him to the local prison. In a communal cell, Spider is beaten up by the leader of the other prisoners. When the marines, with whom Spider had fought in the pub, are put in the cell and prepare to beat up Spider, they too are struck down by the leader. Meanwhile, Dave is being attached to a crane by the young Mexicans in the junkyard and threatened with a cutting torch . However, Wendell manages to steal the Mexicans' car and allows them to pursue him. He does a round of the junkyard, frees Dave and drives him to the workshop, where they meet Woody, Kathy and Spider. To get Spider out of jail, Woody suggested giving Dave's Chevrolet to the sheriff. The sheriff not only wants to arrest the car, but also Dave for stealing the car, which is why Spider and Woody overpower him and drive away with the others in the Chevrolet.

Chased by the young Mexicans and the sheriff, they reach the border. To avoid the sheriff, Spider pretends to a border official that his friends want to smuggle something across the border, but that he has nothing to do with it. Instead of the sheriff, he and his friends are arrested by the border guards. However, they cannot find any contraband goods in the car and release them again. Kathy then sees Larry, her husband, again, who has been looking for her everywhere. She falls happily into his arms and says goodbye to Woody with one last kiss. Back in California, Woody, Dave, Spider and Wendell stop at a diner , where they meet the Marines who still have an account with them. There is a fight and only the shrewd Wendell stays out.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films described The Ripper from high school as a "string of beatings with rude dialogue". For Prisma , the film was "a typical eighties teenage comedy with good-humored young actors".

Janet Maslin of the New York Times found the film not lacking in "nice moments", but neither was it wasteful of them. The role of Kathy may have "not a lot of substance", but Shelley Long played her "charmingly". Long shows an "impressive talent" when it comes to slapstick. In any case, she is "the best thing about the film", although John P. Navin Jr. is "pretty funny" in his role. According to Variety , director Curtis Hanson delivered a “commendable performance” with “a rather simple story”. The actors are "not particularly experienced", but everyone is suitable for their role "to a certain degree". All in all, the film is nothing special, but it is definitely “solid” in relation to everyone involved.

In retrospect, TimeOut London described the film as "lovable but completely predictable triviality". While it used to be “only of interest to Tom Cruise completists”, it has gained a little more importance since “Hanson's rise to the A-League of directors”.

  4. Losin 'It […] isn't without its likable moments, but it isn't overloaded with them, either. […] Kathy isn't much of a character, but she is played charmingly by Shelley Long, […] who demonstrates impressive talents as a physical comedienne. She's the best thing in the movie, although John P. Navin Jr. is also fairly funny as the fireworks tycoon. " Janet Maslin : Losin It (1982) . In: The New York Times , April 8, 1983.
  5. ^ “But director Curtis Hanson makes a commendable effort with a rather obvious story […]. Though none is really very experienced, each is sophisticated to a stereotyped degree. 6. “[…] this amiable, but entirely predictable trifle. Formerly of interest to Cruise completists only, now with an extended life thanks to Hanson's ascension to the directorial A-list. " See Losin 'It on timeout.com
