Josef Seuffert

Josef Seuffert (born June 1, 1926 in Steinheim am Main ; † December 22, 2018 in Mainz ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman and hymn poet.

Life

Josef Seuffert studied during his captivity in the so-called barbed wire seminar , Catholic theology in Chartres (until May 1947) and later in Mainz. On July 15, 1951, he was ordained a priest in Mainz by Bishop Albert Stohr . After various chaplain positions in the diocese of Mainz , he became Federal Curate of the Catholic Young Congregation (KjG) in Düsseldorf (1960–1967) and later secretary of the commission for the unified hymn book of God's praise (1967–1973). He was also the chief editor of the magazine Gottesdienst, published by the Liturgical Institute in Trier and co-founded by him . For his services Josef Seuffert was awarded by Pope Paul VI. with the papal honorary title Monsignor (1975) and by Pope John Paul II in 1986 with the title of Papal Honorary Prelate . In 1981, Bishop Hermann Cardinal Volk von Mainz appointed Seuffert to the cathedral chapter of Mainz Cathedral . In 1996 he retired.

Seuffert headed the pastoral office of the Episcopal Ordinariate in Mainz from 1975 to 1993. Afterwards he was chairman of the liturgical commission of the diocese of Mainz and head of the department “liturgy and church music” until he retired in 1996.

Seuffert died in December 2018 at the age of 92. The pontifical request for the deceased took place on January 9, 2019 with Bishop Peter Kohlgraf in Mainz Cathedral. The funeral took place on January 10, 2019 at 10 a.m. in Josef Seuffer's hometown Steinheim am Main by cathedral dean Heinz Heckwolf.
