German Liturgical Institute
The German Liturgical Institute (DLI) in Trier is an institution of the German Bishops' Conference . It deals with questions of the liturgy of the Catholic Church in Germany and in the German-speaking area .
History and function
With a sentence in his Motuproprio Tra le sollecitudine on church music of November 22nd, 1903, in which he calls for "active participation in the mysteries and the public and solemn prayer of the Church", Pope Pius X laid the foundation for the beginning of the pastoral phase of the liturgical movement . As a result of the encyclical Mediator Dei by Pope Pius XII. (1947), which recognized the efforts of the liturgical movement in principle, "Liturgical Institutes" arose in numerous countries.
The institute was founded in 1947 on the initiative of members of the Liturgical Commission of the Fulda Bishops' Conference . The organization “Liturgisches Institut” e. V., which was renamed "German Liturgical Institute" in 1989.
In its first working phase , the DLI was a co-organizer of international liturgical congresses and study days, which had the function of preparing the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council . The institute, headed by Johannes Wagner from 1950 , made a significant contribution to the renewal of the liturgical books after the Second Vatican Council and to anchor the changed liturgical practice in the congregations. The prayer and hymn book, God's Praise, was also created with the assistance of the German Liturgical Institute.
One of the main tasks is the basic and educational work. His library provides the necessary prerequisites for this. The institute's scientific and pastoral work deals with all forms of worship . The institute tries to bring the liturgical celebrations of the people in Germany and in the German-speaking area today in line with the worship tradition and practice of the Catholic world church. In doing so, the institution exercises the balancing act of preserving the almost two thousand year old liturgy of the Catholic Church and renewing it in line with the requirements of the local churches. The institute operates at the interface between academic theology and liturgical practice, between church institutions and parishes.
In December 2005 the institute founded the Rennings-Wagner-Foundation . The purpose of the foundation is to promote worship in the Catholic Church. The foundation is named after the two former institute directors Johannes Wagner (from 1950) and Heinrich Rennings (director from 1985 until his death in 1994), whose legacy was used as the basis of the foundation.
After the retirement of Prelate Eberhard Amon (1998–2016), the Essen diocesan priest Marius Linnenborn became the new head of the DLI. Iris Maria Blecker-Guczki is responsible for the liturgy series in correspondence courses , Andreas Poschmann for the editing of liturgical books and pastoral liturgical publications and Manuel Uder for the editing of the magazine Gottesdienst . The position of the church music consultant was initially vacant since Matthias Kreuels retired in 2015. Axel Simon joined the church music department in 2017.
Projects
Following the resolutions of the Austrian and German Bishops 'Conferences to develop a new prayer and hymn book as a successor to the standard hymn book, the German Bishops' Conference set up a sub-commission for the common prayer and hymn book (GGB) of the liturgy commission. The new GGB, which again bears the name Praise of God , has been gradually introduced in the respective dioceses since Advent 2013 . Between Advent 2007 and Pentecost 2008, 186 parishes from all dioceses in Germany and Austria tried out the 400-page advance publication for the future praise of God. Like its predecessor, the new GGB was gradually introduced throughout the German-speaking area from Advent 2013, i.e. in Germany , Austria , Liechtenstein ( Archdiocese of Vaduz ), Luxembourg ( Archdiocese of Luxembourg ), South Tyrol ( Diocese of Bozen-Brixen ), in the German-speaking community Belgium ( Diocese of Liège ) and in German-speaking churches worldwide, especially in the Netherlands and France ( Archdiocese of Strasbourg , Diocese of Metz ). The German-speaking dioceses or parts of the diocese of Switzerland, which had already published their own new Catholic hymnbook in 1998, are an exception.
Library of the institute
The library, which currently has around 60,000 volumes and 250 magazines, collects sources and literature on the history, theology and practice of the entire liturgical life. It serves the work of the various departments of the DLI and is the seminar library for the liturgical science seminar of the Trier Theological Faculty . In addition to the Roman Catholic Church, the other Christian churches in the West and East as well as Judaism and Islam are taken into account.
The library is open to anyone interested in liturgy issues.
