The Archdiocese of Luxembourg ( Latin : Archidioecesis Luxemburgensis , Luxembourgish : Äerzbistum Lëtzebuerg ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in Luxembourg (city) . It has existed since 1870 and covers the entire Grand Duchy of Luxembourg . The archbishopric is immediately , d. H. subordinated directly to the Holy See .

history

The medieval German county or the Duchy of Luxembourg in the Holy Roman Empire did not have its own bishopric. In the newly established Luxembourg state in 1839, the church became independent in 1840 through the establishment of an Apostolic Vicariate from the Diocese of Namur . In 1870 it was made a diocese and in 1988 an archdiocese.

The Archbishop of Luxembourg is represented as an individual member in the Council of European Bishops' Conferences .
