Joseph Laurent Philippe SCI (born April 3, 1877 in Rollingergrund , today Luxembourg ; † October 21, 1956 in Luxembourg ) was Bishop of Luxembourg from 1935 to 1956 .

Life

Joseph Laurent Philippe was ordained a priest on May 28, 1904 . On January 20, 1926, he was appointed Superior General of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus .

On April 25, 1935, Pope Pius XI appointed him . as titular bishop of Tinum and coadjutor bishop in Luxembourg . He was ordained episcopal by Francesco Cardinal Marchetti Selvaggiani on June 9 of the same year in Rome . On September 9, 1935 he became Bishop of Luxembourg. During his tenure, the cathedral was enlarged from 1935 to 1938 and Luxembourg was occupied by the German Empire during World War II . A third of the churches and chapels in the diocese were destroyed during acts of war, particularly from 1944 to 1945. Since May 14, 1949, Léon Lommel, a coadjutor bishop, was at his side.
