Jean-Claude Hollerich

Jean-Claude Cardinal Hollerich SJ (born August 9, 1958 in Differdange ) is a Luxembourg Roman Catholic Cardinal and Archbishop of Luxembourg . Since 2018 he has been President of the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community (ComECE).

Life

Jean-Claude Hollerich, who grew up in Vianden , attended the École Apostolique von Clairefontaine and the Lycée Classique in Diekirch . From 1978 to 1981 he studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . On September 27, 1981, he joined the religious order of the Society of Jesus . After a novitiate in Namur from 1981 to 1983, a pastoral internship followed from 1983 to 1985 in Luxembourg. On September 15, 1985 Hollerich traveled to Japan and studied the local language and culture as well as theology at the Sophia University in Tokyo until 1989 . Back in Europe, he obtained a theology licentiate from 1989 to 1990 at the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main . On April 21, 1990 he received in Brussels the priesthood . This was followed by a licentiate in German language and literature from 1990 to 1994 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . Until 2001, Hollerich was a doctoral candidate at the Center for European Integration Research in Bonn . On October 18, 2002, Jean-Claude Hollerich took his religious vows in the St. Ignatius Church in Tokyo. He is a member of the Japanese Jesuit Province, was a professor of German and French and was Vice Rector for General and Student Affairs at Sophia University in Tokyo between 2008 and 2011. During this time he was also the rector of the Jesuit community at Sophia University, where 65 Jesuits from different countries live.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Hollerich on July 12, 2011 Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Luxembourg . The episcopal ordination received his his predecessor, Archbishop Fernand Franck , on 16 October of the same year in the cathedral of Luxembourg ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Cologne , Joachim Cardinal Meisner , and the Archbishop of Tokyo , Peter Takeo Okada . He is the eighth bishop and third archbishop of Luxembourg.

In 2014 he became President of the Conference of Justitia-et-Pax Commissions in Europe. On March 8, 2018, Hollerich was elected to succeed the Archbishop of Munich, Reinhard Cardinal Marx, as Chairman of the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community. Since April 3, 2019, he has also been President of the international altar boys' association CIM ( Coetus Internationalis Ministrantium ).

On September 1, 2019, Pope Francis announced that he would be admitted to the College of Cardinals as a cardinal priest in the consistory of October 5, 2019 . When the cardinal was created, the Pope assigned him the titular church of San Giovanni Crisostomo a Monte Sacro Alto on October 5, 2019 . The takeover of his titular church took place on February 16 of the following year. On February 21, 2020, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for Culture and on July 8, 2020 of the same year, a member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue .

Jean-Claude Hollerich has been a member of the Catholic student associations AV Edo-Rhenania in Tokyo and AV Rheinstein in Cologne since 1994 and later of the KDStV Churtrier in Trier ; each in the CV .

Positions

In October 2019, Hollerich stated that he was in favor of admitting married priests to the Roman Catholic Church alongside celibate priests.
