The Academic Association Edo-Rhenania to Tokyo ( Japanese 学士 会 江 戸 拉 因 会 , Gakushikai Edo Rainkai ) is a student association based on the German model in Tokyo . She is an associate member of the CV and a friendship association of the ÖCV . It was the first and, for decades, the only student union of the German type on the Asian continent .

history

In 1951 the Japanese graduate of the Sophia University Yujiro Shinoda, one of the later founders of AV Edo-Rhenania, became a member of the AV Rheinstein student association in Cologne . In 1963 the AV Rheinstein zu Cologne founded the AV Edo-Rhenania zu Tokyo as a subsidiary , the first senior of which became its own member, Yujiro Shinoda.

In 1964 the AV Edo-Rhenania was recognized as an associate member of the Cartell Association. As a result, she has no voting rights at the Cartell Assembly , but in return she is free to accept unbaptized students as members. This was an important prerequisite for the growth of the AV Edo-Rhenania, because only about one percent of the Japanese population professes Christianity . Otherwise, their status within the Cartell Association is identical to that of other members. In 1974 the Austrian Cartel Association also recognized the AV Edo-Rhenania as a friendly association.

Since its foundation, AV Edo-Rhenania has been committed to deepening the German-Japanese relationship, which is reflected in the awarding of scholarships to Japanese exchange students at German-speaking universities and the organization of language competitions and European trips for Japanese students.

Name, color and motto

The name Edo-Rhenania is derived from Edo , the former name of Tokyo, and the Rhine River ( lat. Rhenus), in the vicinity of which is the parent connection of the AV Edo-Rhenania, the AV Rheinstein to Cologne . The colors of the connection are gold-black-white. Gold is on the concept of Rhinegold an allusion to the river Rhine and in turn the face of an Dende in the Rhineland parent compound of the Edo Rhenania. Black is a component of the German flag while white is a component of the Japanese flag. In this way, the connecting colors symbolize the German-Japanese friendship supported by AV Rheinstein and AV Edo-Rhenania.

In contrast to what is usual for connections based in Europe, the AV Edo-Rhenania uses a samurai helmet (Japanese: Kabuto ) in its coat of arms instead of a knight . With the exception of the last line, the boys and fox stanzas are not written in German, but in Japanese. The last line was left in German, so that members of other connections, as is customary when reciting stanzas for boys and foxes, can join the last line. The federal song of the AV Edo-Rhenania is entirely in Japanese.

The Latin motto " Ex oriente lux " means "The light (comes) from the east". Historically, the catchphrase originally described the fact that the sun rises in the east, but later changed its meaning to the fact that the culture and wisdom came from the Orient. Based on the latter interpretation, the AV Edo-Rhenania adopted the phrase as a motto.

Albertus ring

The Albertus-Ring is an amalgamation of Catholic academic communities which, according to the founding charter , stand up against the "influence of atheism, liberalism, chauvinism and materialism on ethical and moral evaluation and the constant threat from communism" and "maintain personal contact, student exchanges Promote each other at their universities, grant each other every relief and help and act in an exemplary manner in the field of international understanding. "
The founding members were:

A friendship between AV Edo-Rhenania, AV Rheinstein, AV Turicia and KAV Danubia continues from the intensive contact of the founding years. In honor of the patron saint of Albertus ring, the German scholar and patron of all academics Albertus Magnus , the AV Edo Rhenania conducts an annual so-called Albertus festival which next to a Catholic service a student Kommersbuch includes.
