The VKDSt Hasso-Rhenania Gießen in the CV is a Catholic , colored , non-striking student union . It was founded in 1883 and is one of the oldest connections within the Cartell Association of Catholic German Student Associations (CV), the largest corporation association in Europe. Its active members are predominantly students from the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . Due to its history, it is the only connection in the CV that has a sister connection of the same name at another university location, namely the VKDSt Hasso-Rhenania Mainz in the CV. At the moment the number of Hasso-Rhenanen is around 300 federal brothers .

history

founding

On the occasion of the 29th Katholikentag in Frankfurt in 1882, the colored Catholic student associations organized a cartel assembly for the 18th time . Such events reflected the emerging interest in religiously motivated student associations. Kübel and Freiherr Gedult von Jungsfeld , two respected Catholics from Giessen, wanted to strengthen the circle of the CV. Because they were quite influential in Catholic circles, especially thanks to the newly founded church choir, they encouraged the establishment of a Catholic association in Giessen . After the Cartell meeting, they quickly got into conversation with Hugo Menzel ( Mm! ), Franz Walter ( BvBo! ) And Otto Brun ( BuL! ), Who already had a CV connection, as well as with the Giessen students Christian Langstroff and Hans Vogel, who were also at the time Showed interest in establishing a Catholic association.

On December 10, 1882, the above-mentioned met in the restaurant "Zum Deutschen Kaiser" in the Kaiserallee (today Grünberger Straße) and prepared a draft statute for a "Free Association Hasso-Rhenania". The name was chosen because of the geographical origin of the founders, who mostly came from Rheinhessen . A former corps student named Franz Mercken ( Lov! ) Was persuaded to help set up the company. On December 15, 1882, he was able to convince the other members to establish the "Free Association Hasso-Rhenania" as a colored student union. At the same time it was decided that the chest of the fraternity members should be adorned with a yellow-white-red ribbon. On the evening of January 15, 1883, the six students Mercken, Menzel, Brun, Walter, Vogel and Langstroff met in the "German Kaiser" for the final foundation. In addition, Mercken proposed the motto “Neminem time, neminem laede!”. Translated this means: fear no one, do not hurt anyone! The selection of the founding batches carried out on the same evening resulted in: Mercken X, Brun XX + XXX and Vogel XXXX. At the same time, Kübel was named the association's first honorary member .

On January 18, the registration of the new corporation as a “student union on a Christian-social basis” was submitted to the then Rector Stade. Since that day, January 18, 1883 is the official founding date of Hasso-Rhenania. On the same evening the founding party was celebrated together with members of Saxonia Münster and the entirety of the members of Rhenania Marburg .

Jean Ledroit, originally a Frenchman from Alsace-Lorraine , was the first Fux to join the association on February 1, 1883 . He quickly identified himself with the ideas of the connection and proved this several times, in particular by writing the Hasso-Rhenanen federal song and designing the coat of arms that has been preserved to this day .

Finally, on February 22, 1883, the association submitted an application for inclusion in the CV, but was only accepted as a full member in the Cartell Association in February 1884. Hasso-Rhenania was added to the CV as the twelfth compound. Today it takes eleventh place in the order of the CV connections - after the transfer of the AV Austria Innsbruck to the ÖCV . The official abbreviation of the VKDSt Hasso-Rhenania Gießen in the CV is H-RG!

Until the ban by the "Third Reich"

After the founding, there were initially difficult times for Hasso-Rhenania: Due to the culture war , the connection had to worry about its continued existence. In the winter semester of 1887/1888, there were in fact only three boys and two foxes among the active members. The persistence of the compound is in particular students of veterinary medicine to thank for providing communication events first as Konkneipanten visited and entered later as full members in the connection.

Already in the winter semester of 1903/1904 the student Johann Schreiber took over the office of the suburb president of the 39th Cartel Assembly , which took place at that time in Cologne . In 1914 the First World War broke out. Federal brother Josef Müller was the first Hasso-Rhenane to be reported first as missing and later as killed. During this time he was followed by 14 other great Hasso-Rhenans. The memorial plaque for those who fell in World War I can be found in the side chapel of St. Bonifatius Church in Liebigstrasse.

After the First World War, the number of students in Giessen fell sharply, which also caused the connection to suffer. Nevertheless, in 1924 the first connection house at Klinikstrasse 24 was acquired. Due to the fact that the rooms were too small (among other things, the Kneipsaal was not representative enough), this house was sold in 1926. In the same year a property in Burggraben 9 was acquired, which even had a bowling alley in the garden and a pub in the basement.

The turning point in German history in 1933 brought the first difficulties for the connection. Nevertheless, the 50th foundation festival of the Hasso-Rhenania was celebrated with great enthusiasm in 1933 : At the head of the parade through Gießen even three mounted Chargiert of the connection marched . Like all Christian student associations , Hasso-Rhenania was also exposed to persecution by the National Socialists after the seizure of power . It was to be expected that, of all the connections in Giessen, Hasso-Rhenania was the first and the most severely fought. In order to forestall a forced dissolution, the association dissolved its Aktivitas on May 30, 1936 by resolution of the convention and sold its association house. At that time the following rhyme was spoken: “Unfortunately, Hasso-Rhenania will soon close the shutter and then open again when the government changes.” Although the old gentlemen's association was forcibly dissolved in 1938, the members kept lively contact and continued a life of connections underground.

After the Second World War

A total of 32 federal brothers perished in the Second World War , including Fritz Bockius , a former member of the Reichstag who died in political captivity in Mauthausen concentration camp .

After the war, the Philistine Senior Schollmayer, who was in office before the dissolution of the association, succeeded in re-establishing the Hasso-Rhenania Philistine Circle, which was dissolved in the Third Reich. A little later, on June 26, 1946, today's sister association VKDSt Hasso-Rhenania Mainz was founded . It was initially intended as a re-establishment of Hasso-Rhenania Gießen, because the University of Gießen , which was completely destroyed in the war, was initially not to be rebuilt. Because of the cities lying in different occupation zones, communication difficulties arose, so that the connection in Gießen was also wanted to revive at the same time. In the summer semester of 1946, a university of natural resources and veterinary medicine opened in Giessen, not a full university. Nonetheless, it was decided that the Hasso-Rhenania would be reborn soon in Giessen. At the re-establishment festival on January 28, 1948, 15 foxes were received. In 1950 Hasso-Rhenania Mainz was accepted into the Cartell Association. Both re-foundations were justified. Since then there have been two connections that bear the name Hasso-Rhenania, which is an isolated case in the Cartell to this day. Furthermore, these two connections in Gießen and Mainz have since been in a sister relationship to each other: The Hasso-Rhenania from Mainz is to be understood as a subsidiary, as its connection operation is completely independent of the Hasso-Rhenania from Gießen. Furthermore, Hasso-Rhenania Mainz had committed itself to becoming an independent corporation independent of Gießen, with its own activitas and philistine. Its members have voting rights at the convents of the respective sister association. As an expression of this solidarity, the two senior citizens have been wearing the boys' band of their sister connections since February 1968 as a seniority band .

Under the leadership of Wolfgang Hesse as suburb president, Hasso-Rhenania took over the suburb of the Cartel for the second time in the summer semester 1995 for the 110th Cartel meeting in Gießen / Marburg .

In the summer semester of 2008, on the occasion of the 125th Foundation Festival of the Association, a party was struck in the Giessen congress hall.

Color, circle and coat of arms

Color and motto

The boy colors of the Hasso-Rhenania Gießen are "yellow-white-red". Each color has a specific meaning with regard to the principles of connection : yellow stands for the Roman Catholic faith (religio), white heralds the light of science (scientia) and red is an allegory of the fraternal friendship (amicitia). Further interpretations are, for example, the yellow and white colors of the Vatican , which merge with the Hessian red and white.

The fox colors are derived from this color pattern, but are limited to "yellow-red". Both one and the other band pattern have a silver percussion on the side .

The head color of Hasso-Rhenania Gießen is a red flat cap and the Chargierten wear black pekeschen .

The motto of the association is “Neminem time - Neminem laede!” (“Don't fear anyone - don't harm anyone!”).

Circle

Circle of Hasso-Rhenania Giessen

The Hasso-Rhenanenzirkel is a couleur student monogram , which consists of five letters: V, C, F, H, R, followed by an exclamation mark. These letters stand for VIVAT CRESCAT FLOREATQUE HASSO-RHENANIA (Hasso-Rhenania live, grow and prosper). Another interpretation is VIVAT CIRCULUS FRATRUM HASSO-RHENANIAE (Long live the circle of the brothers of Hasso-Rhenania). The exclamation mark stands for IN AETERNUM and means that the connection still has an existing activity with student members.

The stylized H and R in the middle stand for the name of the connection, Hasso-Rhenania. The stylized V in the lower half stands for VIVAT (live). The stylized C in the lower part of the middle arch stands for CRESCAT (grow). The upper part of the middle arch, together with the line above, forms a stylized F and stands for FLOREAT (bloom or thrive).

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Hasso-Rhenania Giessen

The crest of the Hasso Rhenania pouring shows a white with yellow-red feathers ornamented helmet on one of the yellow and red vine leaves existing helmet cover . The coat of arms is divided into four fields by a white cross.

On the heraldically upper right side of the coat of arms, the connecting colors can be seen in a right-hand slant, in the way the Hasso-Rhenanen ribbon is worn. The Hasso-Rhenanen circle was applied to these colors. Heraldically, the upper left figure depicts the following: Two hands lie in friendship, in the background lies a laurel wreath with a connecting bow, which surrounds the friendship bond of January 18, 1883. In the lower right field the anchor symbolizes the firm anchoring of the connection with the basic principles and with the motto "Neminem time - Neminem laede" written on the parchment roll. At the bottom left you can see the Kurmainzer double wheel . The grapes with the vine leaves indicate the wine-growing region of Rheinhessen , where most of the founders had their origins. The symbol is at the same time a reference to the cheerfulness with which the members of the association shape the life of connections, their studies and their professional activities.
