Fernand Franck (born May 6, 1934 in Esch-Alzette , Canton Esch , Luxembourg ) is retired Archbishop of Luxembourg .

Life

Fernand Franck was the only child of the married couple Jean Franck, chief of the hut police at Arbed , and Catherine Kaster. After his military service in Bitburg, Capellen and Luxembourg, he entered the Luxembourg seminary in 1954 and moved to the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster in 1959 . On June 29, 1960 Fernand Franck received in Munster the priesthood and was chaplain in Differdange -Fousbann to 1971 and priest in Clausen from 1971 to 1977. He was also director of the Catholic Child Action from 1969 to 1977 Director of the Holy Childhood plant in Luxembourg from 1969 until 1977 and national director of the Pontifical Mission in Luxembourg from 1973 to 1977.

In 1977 he was called to Rome and was General Secretary of the Pontifical Work for the Dissemination of the Faith and from 1988 also Secretary of the Pontifical Work of the Apostle Peter . He was also a consultator of the Pontifical Council " Cor Unum ", consultator of the Pontifical Council for Social Communication and a member of the "Fondation Pie XII".

Pope John Paul II appointed Fernand Franck Archbishop of Luxembourg on December 21, 1990. His predecessor, Archbishop Emeritus Jean Hengen , donated his episcopal ordination on February 2, 1991 in the Cathedral of Luxembourg ; Co- consecrators were Curia Archbishop José Tomás Sánchez and the Trier Bishop, Hermann Josef Spital . His motto is Ut unum sint (“That they are one”).

Since 1981 he has been a spiritual advisor to the Embassy of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to the Holy See . Fernand Franck is a member of the Episcopal Commission Ecclesia celebrans and President of the Kaiser Karl Prayer League for the Peace of Nations.

Since 1994 he has been the first Grand Prior of the Luxembourg Lieutenancy of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . In 2011 he was appointed the first Grand Cross Knight of the Lieutenancy of Luxembourg.

honors and awards

In 1977 he was made an honorary prelate of the Pope ("Monsignore"). Since 1990 he has been the Dome of Honor of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Luxembourg. He was also honored as an officer of the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and an officer in the Order of the Oak Crown (1977), Knight of the French Legion of Honor (1977), Lion d'Echternach (1993), "D'Sëlwer Plack Dicks-Rodange-Lentz" of the " Actioun Lëtzebuergesch ”, Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (1997). On June 29, 2011, he was appointed Honorary Chapter Chapter at Trier Cathedral with the rare distinction .
