The French Bishops 'Conference ( French : Conférence des Evêques de France ) emerged from the former assembly of the cardinals and archbishops of France (1945–1966) and has been the permanent bishops' conference of all bishops of the Roman Catholic Church in France since 1966 . She is a member of the Council of the European Bishops 'Conferences (CCEE) and is represented in the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community (COMECE).

Task

The French Bishops' Conference defines its main focus and focus on the encounter in faith , on the education of children and young people, on family coexistence and on life in Christian community. It deals with questions about society and promotes solidarity with the churches of the world.

Working basis

The French Bishops' Conference was founded based on the ordinances of the Second Vatican Council . It is an episcopal conference and gathering of all French bishops and has set itself the apostolic task of preserving the churches. She wants to align her tasks and methods with the given time and serve the well-being of the faithful. Their working basis is anchored in the Codex Iuris Canonici (CIC) of 1983, in which the modalities and functions of the Bishops' Conferences are laid down. The episcopal assembly is not an intermediate instance of the French episcopate to the Holy See .

Permanent advice

The “Permanent Council” consists of the President, the two Vice-Presidents and five other elected members from the College of Bishops. He prepares the meetings of the bishops' conference and is responsible for the execution of the plenary assemblies . The council meets in June and September.

Committee

The Committee for Studies and Projects was set up in 2005 and meets on the eve of the general assembly. It oversees ongoing work and projects, determines the duration of the meetings and monitors the financing arrangements.

The Bishops' Conference established the following councils, made up of elected bishops, experts and elected lay people:

  • Council for child and youth pastoral care
  • Council for Economic, Social and Legal Affairs
  • Council for Unity of Faith and Relations with Judaism
  • Council for Solidarity

Members

Members of the French Bishops' Conference are all incumbent diocesan bishops from metropolitan France and the overseas departments as well as French cardinals emeritus living in France . Bishops from French overseas territories with a different status are not members, but are invited to the plenary assembly without voting rights.
