Roger Marie Élie Cardinal Etchegaray (born September 25, 1922 in Espelette , France , † September 4, 2019 in Cambo-les-Bains ) was Archbishop of Marseille and Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church and until 2017 also Subdean of the College of Cardinals . From 1971 to 1979 he was the first President of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences .

After the death of Franciszek Macharski in August 2016, Etchegaray was the last living cardinal of the consistory of June 1979 and thus the longest-serving living cardinal. He was also the oldest living cardinal for one day after the death of José de Jesús Pimiento Rodriguez on September 3, 2019.

Life

Roger Etchegaray, a native Basque , entered the Small Seminary in Ustaritz at a young age . He studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the seminary in Bayonne . At the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome , he completed a further degree in theology and doctorate in canon law . On July 13, 1947, he received the sacrament of ordination and was installed as a parish pastor in his home diocese of Bayonne . In 1949 he became secretary to the local Bishop Léon-Albert Terrier . After he was responsible for the charitable work of the diocese from 1957, Etchegaray rose to the position of vicar general in Bayonne in 1960 .

From 1961 he held a responsible position in the secretariat of the French Bishops' Conference and was instrumental in setting up the secretariat for pastoral matters. On August 4, 1962, Pope John XXIII awarded him the honorary title of House Prelate of His Holiness . From 1966 to 1970 he took on the role of general secretary at the French Bishops' Conference.

On March 29, 1969, Pope Paul VI appointed him . as titular bishop of Gemellae in Numidia and auxiliary bishop in Paris . On May 27, 1969, he received the episcopal ordination through François Cardinal Marty ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Rennes , Paul Cardinal Gouyon and Curia Bishop Władysław Rubin . A year later Etchegaray became Archbishop of Marseille . In 1971 he became the first President of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences , which he remained until 1979. In 1975 he succeeded Cardinal Marty as chairman of the French Bishops' Conference and held this office until 1981. In the same year he followed this in the office of prelate of the Mission de France o Pontigny , which he also held until 1981.

On June 30, 1979 Pope John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Leone I in the college of cardinals , in 1984 he appointed him president of the Pontifical Council "Cor Unum" and the Pontifical Council "Iustitia et Pax" . Roger Etchegaray was in charge of "Cor Unum" until 1995. In 1994 the Pope appointed him President of the Central Committee for the Preparation of the Holy Year 2000. On June 24, 1998 Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation as President of the Council “Iustitia et Pax” and elevated him to Cardinal Bishop of Porto-Santa Rufina . The induction as Cardinal Bishop took place on October 4th of the same year.

Cardinal Etchegaray earned special services through his mediation attempts in various trouble spots around the world. John Paul II made him special envoy in peace missions, e.g. B. to the besieged Sarajevo , to the civil war country Mozambique , 2001 to the besieged Bethlehem to end the clashes between Israelis and Palestinians over the Church of the Nativity, 2003 to Iraq to get the Iraqi ruler Saddam Hussein so far that he has his will the United States bends, and so to prevent a war between the two states. Cardinal Etchegaray did not take part in either the 2005 or 2013 conclave, since he had passed the age limit of 80 in 2002 .

On April 30, 2005, Pope Benedict XVI confirmed him . as the new sub-dean of the College of Cardinals. The previous sub-dean Angelo Cardinal Sodano had previously been elected dean of the college as the successor to the new pope .

When Benedict XVI. On December 24, 2009, during the Christmas mass, a woman unexpectedly jumped on him and fell to the ground. Etchegaray also fell because he was knocked to the ground by a civilian bodyguard. He suffered a femoral neck fracture and had to undergo an operation, whereas Benedict XVI. remained unharmed. After 3 weeks in the Gemelli Clinic , Etchegaray was finally discharged. On October 25, 2015, Cardinal Etchegaray fell during the closing mass of the family synod. He lost his balance when Pope Francis tried to shake his hand when moving out and suffered another fracture in his thigh. On June 10, 2017, Pope Francis released him from the post of sub-dean of the College of Cardinals at his request.
