Wladyslaw Rubin

Władysław Cardinal Rubin (born September 20, 1917 in Toki , Poland , † November 28, 1990 in the Vatican ) was auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Gniezno and later Curial Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Władysław Rubin studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Lviv , Beirut and Rome . During the Second World War he was interned in a labor camp and after his release he joined the Polish Army. In 1946 he received the sacrament of ordination in Beirut and then looked after the Polish refugees there as a pastor . Further studies took him to Italy , where he looked after Polish immigrants in various locations from 1953 to 1958. From 1959 to 1964 he was the rector of the Pontifical College for students from Poland in Rome .

On November 17, 1964, Pope Paul VI appointed him . as titular bishop of Serta and auxiliary bishop in Gniezno. He was ordained bishop on November 29th of the same year by the Polish primate , Stefan Cardinal Wyszynski . This also appointed him the representative of the Primate of Poland for the pastoral care of the Polish emigrants. In February 1967 he served as General Secretary at the World Synod of Bishops. Pope John Paul II accepted Wladyslaw Rubin on June 30, 1979 as a cardinal deacon with the title diaconia Santa Maria in Via Lata in the college of cardinals and in 1980 made him the cardinal prefect of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches . On October 30, 1985, however, he resigned from this position before reaching retirement age. Two days before his death he was elevated to cardinal priest pro hac vice while retaining his title diakonia . He died on November 28, 1990 and found his final resting place in the Cathedral of Lubaczów in the Archdiocese of Lviv .
