The Archdiocese of Lviv ( Latin Archidioecesis Leopolitana Latinorum , Ukrainian Львівська архідієцезія ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese in Ukraine . The church district in the north of the country today includes the oblasts of Lviv , Ternopil , Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernivtsi .
history
Around 1361, King Casimir the Great of Poland established a number of dioceses, including one in Halych , after he had subjugated the Principality of Galicia-Volhynia . Around 1412 the (arch) bishopric was moved from Halytsch to Lemberg. Suffragan dioceses at that time were Przemyśl , Chełm , Lutsk , Kamjanez and Kiev . 1772/95 the western parts of the archdiocese coincided with Lemberg, Przemysl and Chelm in the partitions of Poland to Habsburg . The eastern parts of the archdiocese with Lutsk , Kamyanets and Zhytomyr fell to Russia and were incorporated into the newly founded Archdiocese of Mahiljou . In 1817/18 the Diocese of Lublin (since 1805 instead of Chełm ) was spun off into the Archdiocese of Warsaw . The Archbishop of Lviv bears the title of Primate of Galicia and Lodomeria . Suffragan dioceses are Przemyśl and Tarnów .
In the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria (1861-1918) the Archbishop of Lemberg had a virile vote in the Galician Landtag .
