Catholic Church in Ukraine

The Catholic Church in Ukraine has around 1.1 million Catholic Christians (as of 2007). There are three rite churches represented in the Ukraine , the Latin Church (Western Church) as well as the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church , both Eastern Catholic Churches of the Byzantine tradition .

With 8% of the population, the majority of Catholics belong to the Ukrainian Catholic Church, around 2% of the population belong to the Latin Church and 0.8% to the Ruthenian Church.

The last apostolic nuncio was Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti until July 2020 .

The Roman Catholic Church was very limited in its activities during the Stalin era, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church had been banned and could only survive as an underground church and in exile.

Mieczyslaw Mokrzycki is Archbishop of Lviv and Metropolitan in Ukraine and Chairman of the Ukrainian Bishops' Conference .

Ukrainian Catholic Church

The Ukrainian Catholic Church was founded in 1596 as an Eastern Catholic Church , which follows the Byzantine tradition , but recognizes the supremacy of the Pope and is united with Rome. It has its own bishops' conference, the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Catholic Church .
