Roman Catholic Church in Monaco
The Roman Catholic Church in Monaco was a part of a French diocese until 1887 , after which it became an immediates diocese, and today it is an independent archdiocese , without being a metropolitan diocese , directly subordinate to the Holy See .
Prince Rainier I declared the Roman Catholic Church a state church .
On March 15, 1887, the 2 km² principality on the Mediterranean received its own diocese . As the number of residents increased, so did the number of believers between 1949 and 2002 from 14,950 to 29,000. In Monaco, around 90.6% of the population is Roman Catholic. The bishops, who almost always came from France, received the title of Archbishop on July 30, 1981 , since Monaco became an immediates archbishopric.
Today the archbishopric has 13 diocesan and 7 religious priests . At the same time, 15 nuns live in the 6 parishes of Monaco.
The Apostolic Nuncio in Monaco has been Archbishop Antonio Arcari since May 2019 .
