history
The history of the Roman Catholic Church goes back to the time of the Christianization of Norway around 1000. In 1537 Lutheran teaching was introduced in Denmark-Norway and the Catholic Church was banned. However, there were small Roman Catholic groups in Norway until around 1700. From 1677 to 1690 the Jesuits had a settlement in Fredrikstad , at the invitation of the Catholic garrison commander Johan Caspar von Cicignon . It was not until 1843 that King Christian VIII allowed the establishment of the Roman Catholic parish of St. Olav in Oslo.
Norway and the Holy See have had full diplomatic relations since 1982 . Apostolic Nuncio in Norway has been Archbishop James Patrick Green since October 2017 .
Membership numbers
As recently as 2009, the statistics authority had only recorded 57,000 Catholic church members; in 2010, the Catholic Church reported almost 70,000 members. Then in 2012 it should have been around 110,000 and in 2014 over 140,000 members. Since labor migration to Norway increased sharply with the eastward expansion of the EU (2004) , Polish citizens have made up around a third of the registered church members. Since then, Norway has even assumed a total of up to 200,000 Catholics, that would be 4 percent of the resident population.
The Norwegian authorities are investigating the Catholic Church because of the “illegal” and “fraudulent” method used by the Diocese of Oslo to unceremoniously declare immigrants Catholic believers in order to receive additional public payments.
