Roman Catholic Church in Kazakhstan
The Roman Catholic Church in Kazakhstan is a missionary church that emerged over the past few decades.
The Christianity in Kazakhstan can be traced back to the 2nd century. The Catholic Church is represented with both the Roman and Byzantine rites .
In 1991 Pope John Paul II founded the Apostolic Administration of Kazakhstan. From the administration, the territorial units " Mission sui juris " in Tajikistan , Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan were founded in 1997 and the administrations in Atyrau , Astana (since 2019 Nur-Sultan) and Almaty in 1999 . In 1999 the administration of Kazakhstan was renamed the Diocese of Karaganda. In 2003 the Administratur Astana was raised to an archdiocese.
In 2019 the Apostolic Administration of Kazakhstan and Central Asia was created for the believers of the Byzantine Rite .
Archbishop Tomasz Peta is the chairman of the Kazakh Bishops' Conference . Apostolic Nuncio has been Archbishop Francis Assisi Chullikatt since April 30, 2016 .
