Roman Catholic Church in Myanmar

The Roman Catholic Church in Myanmar comprises only a small minority of all residents. The number of its members is estimated at 600,000, or 1% of the population.

The Church in Myanmar was founded by Portuguese missionaries in the 16th century. A Catholic hierarchy was not established until 1955. Myanmar is divided into 14 dioceses:

The military junta has been hampering the development of the Catholic Church since the 1960s. The Catholic Church in Myanmar is not allowed to maintain its own schools, hospitals or its own press organs. Since the political change in 2010, the opportunities for the Catholic Church to get involved in education and social affairs have slowly improved.

The Catholic Church is heavily involved in the reconstruction after cyclone Komen in early August 2015 .

On May 4, 2017, the establishment of full diplomatic relations between Myanmar and the Holy See at the level of an Apostolic Nunciature in Myanmar and the dispatch of an ambassador through the country was announced. On August 12, 2017, Pope Francis appointed the previous Apostolic Delegate , Archbishop Paul Tschang In-Nam , as the first Apostolic Nuncio . At the end of November 2017 the Pope made an apostolic trip to Myanmar with a visit to Yangon and Nay Pyi Taw.
