The Roman Catholic Church in Bangladesh is part of the worldwide Catholic Church.

History and organization

The Roman Catholic Church was founded in the 17th century. In 1598 the Jesuit Francisco Fernandez settled in Chittagong in the south of what is now Bangladesh.

In 1977 secularism was abandoned and Bangladesh was declared an Islamic State. The Islam - 1988 as the official state religion explained - with about 88.3 percent (~ 130 million Bangladeshis) of the population by far the strongest religion in the country. The number of Catholic Christians is currently 270,000. The number of Protestants is roughly the same , spread over 32 churches or ecclesiastical communities . There is a large seminary in Dhaka . In 1971, the Bishops' Conference of Bangladesh (Catholic Bishop's Conference of Bangladesh, CBCB) was founded.

Apostolic Nuncio has been Archbishop George Kocherry since 2013 .

From November 30, 2017 to December 2, 2017, Pope Francis visited Bangladesh.

Dioceses

Dhaka Cooperative Bank

Alongside the Grameen Bank , which was founded by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus , the "Christian Cooperative for Cooperative Loans of Dhaka" is the oldest non-profit credit bank in Bangladesh. The Catholic institution was founded on July 3, 1955 by the Congregation of the Holy Cross CSC. Over 400 other banks have emerged from the Dhaka cooperative bank, which are primarily involved in the field of microcredit , the fight against AIDS , the rehabilitation of drug addicts, securing the drinking water supply and aquaculture.

Notre Dame University

The Bangladesh Catholic Education Board (BCEB) and the Task Force for Catholic University in Bangladesh of the Bishops' Conference of Bangladesh decided on August 19, 2011 in Dhaka to found the first Catholic University in Bangladesh. The college will be called Notre Dame University .
