history
Christianity in Cyprus dates back to the first century. Today around 77% of the Cypriot population belong to the Orthodox Church; most Christians have lived in the southern Republic of Cyprus since 1974 . Catholics or Anglicans are a small minority.
Francis of Assisi probably made his trip to the Holy Land via Cyprus. The Franciscan Order has been based in Cyprus since the beginning . In the Middle Ages at the time of the Crusades there was a Roman Catholic diocese of Nicosia .
The Archparchy of Cyprus is a Greek-Catholic eparchy of the Maronite Church united with Rome, founded in 1357, currently headed by Archbishop Joseph Soueif of Cyprus.
The Holy See has diplomatic relations with Cyprus and has been represented by an Apostolic Nunciature since 1973 . Apostolic Nuncio has been Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli since September 2017 .

The Roman Catholic Church in Cyprus no longer has a hierarchical structure. The island belongs to the jurisdiction of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and is currently represented by the Episcopal Vicar Umberto Baratto , who has his seat in Cyprus.
There are four Roman Catholic parishes in Cyprus , namely in Nicosia (Holy Cross), Larnaka (St. Mary of Graces), Limassol (St. Catherine) and Paphos (Aya Kyriakí) with affiliated pastoral care centers in Agia Napa , Girne / Kyrenia and Polis Chrysochous .
