William Aquin Carew

William Aquin Carew (born October 23, 1922 in St. John's , Canada ; † May 8, 2012 there ) was a diplomat of the Holy See .

Life

William Aquin Carew, son of William J. Carew CBE KCSS and Mary Florence Channing, attended St. Bonaventure College and St. Paul Seminary at the University of Ottawa from 1927 to 1940 . He was ordained a priest on June 15, 1947 and became the personal secretary of Ildebrando Antoniutti , the Apostolic Delegate for Canada and Newfoundland. From 1950 to 1952 he studied at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy in Rome. In 1952 he became the personal secretary of Patrick James Skinner CIM , Archbishop of Saint John's, Newfoundland . In 1953 he entered the service of the State Secretariat of the Vatican and was its head of the English-speaking section from 1963 to 1969 and was thus responsible for all state and diplomatic audiences of the Pope.

Carew accompanied the papal trip to Québec (1959) and the 25th anniversary of evangelism in Cebu , Philippines . He organized the trips of Pope Paul VI. to the Holy Land (1964) and Uganda (1969).

On November 27, 1969, Pope Paul VI appointed him. the Titular Archbishop of Telde and it ordered the apostolic nuncio in Burundi and Rwanda . The Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for Religious , Ildebrando Cardinal Antoniutti , donated him on January 4, 1970 at St. Peter's Basilica , the episcopal ordination ; Co-consecrators were the Archbishops of the Curia Giovanni Benelli and Sergio Pignedoli . In April 1972 he was the Pope's special envoy to Bangladesh.

On May 10, 1974, he was appointed Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Cyprus and Apostolic Delegate in Jerusalem and Palestine ( Israel and Jordan ). He was also an Apostolic Visitator in Greece . From 1974 to 1983 he was Chancellor at Bethlehem University and spiritual director of theological studies in Tantur and in Abraham House , a hospice in Jerusalem.

On August 30, 1983, he was appointed Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Japan . Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation on November 11, 1997.

Honors

Pope Paul VI bestowed on him on June 21, 1963 the honorary title of Surplus Chamberlain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) and on December 8, 1964 the title of House Prelate of His Holiness .
