The Order of the Holy Pope Silvester (short New Years Eve ; Latin Ordo Sancti Silvestri Papae ) is a papal order for services to the Roman Catholic Church and the Catholic faith. It is awarded indirectly by the Pope to lay people .
history
Today's New Year's Eve was established on October 31, 1841 with the Breve Quod hominum mentes by Pope Gregory XVI. founded, which connected this with the older Order of the Golden Spur .
With the Breve Multum ad excitandos , Pius X reformed the papal religious system on February 7, 1905 and separated the New Year's Order from the Order of the Golden Spur.
Pope John Paul II introduced today's religious classes on June 2, 1993. Since 1993, the New Year's Order can also be awarded to women.

Order decoration
The insignia of the New Year's Eve are based on those of the Order of the Golden Spur . The badge shows the image of Pope Saint Silvester I (314–335) with the inscription SANC on an eight-pointed, golden-white enameled cross . SYLVESTER PM . The golden spur on the lower cross arm, a reference to the corresponding order, was omitted with the reform of 1905.
The current ribbon is black with three fine red lines.
The uniform consists of a black tailcoat with an open front and gold embroidery as well as a collar and lapels made of black velvet , a bicorn and a sword .
