Cardinal Ildebrando Antoniutti (born August 3, 1898 in Nimis , Province of Udine , Italy , † August 1, 1974 near Bologna ) was an Italian clergyman, Vatican diplomat and curia cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Antoniutti studied in Udine and Rome trays Catholic theology and philosophy and received on 5 December 1920, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He then taught as a theology lecturer at the Seminary in Udine and at the same time served as the personal secretary of the Archbishop of Udine . From 1927 to 1934 he performed various duties with the Apostolic Delegation in China . From 1934 to 1936 he worked in the Apostolic Nunciature in Portugal . In 1936 Pope Pius XI appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Synnada in Phrygia and apostolic delegate in Albania . He was ordained bishop on June 29, 1936 by Cardinal Pietro Fumasoni Biondi , Prefect of the Congregation Propaganda Fide ; Co-consecrators were Antonio Anastasio Rossi , Latin Patriarch of Constantinople and Prelate of the Territorial Prelature of Pompei , and Celso Costantini , Secretary of the Congregation Propaganda Fide .

During the Spanish Civil War , the Pope sent him to Spain as a special envoy . From 1938 to 1953 Antoniutti was Apostolic Delegate for Canada and Newfoundland , from 1953 Apostolic Nuncio in Spain and was awarded the Collane des Ordens de Isabel la Católica in 1962 .

He took part in the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 and Pope John XXIII. appointed him on March 19, 1962 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Sebastiano alle Catacombe in the college of cardinals . For some, he was considered a moderately conservative candidate for the Pope; In 1963 Antoniutti became prefect of the religious congregation , which he headed until 1973. On September 13, 1973 he was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Velletri .

He died in a car accident near Bologna and was buried in the parish church of Santi Gervasio e Protasio , where he was born .
