Fernando Cento

Fernando Cardinal Cento (born August 10, 1883 in Pollenza , Macerata Province , Italy , † January 13, 1973 in Rome ) was bishop of the Acireale diocese and a Vatican diplomat .

Life

Fernando Cento studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Macerata and Rome . He received on 23 December 1905, the sacrament of Holy Orders , and then taught at the seminary of Macerata. From 1916 to 1918 he was the secretary of the papal majordomo . In 1917 Pope Benedict XV awarded him . the title of papal secret chamberlain, in 1919 he appointed him canon of the cathedral of Macerata, where Fernando Cento founded and published the diocesan newspaper Il Cittadino .

In 1922 he was appointed Bishop of Acireale . The episcopal ordination received his Giovanni Cardinal Tacci Porcelli , secretary of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches , on September 3, 1922; Co- consecrators were Domenico Pasi , Bishop of Macerata-Tolentino , and Placido Ferniani , Bishop of Ruvo e Bitonto . Pope Pius XI appointed Fernando Cento in 1926 as apostolic nuncio in Venezuela , in 1936 he entrusted him with the same task in Peru . Pope Pius XII appointed him in 1940 apostolic nuncio for Belgium and Luxembourg . In 1953 Fernando Cento was the papal special envoy for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation celebrations . In the same year he was appointed head of the Apostolic Nunciature in Portugal .

Pope John XXIII took him on December 15, 1958 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Eustachio in the college of cardinals . Both under Pope John XXIII. as well as under Pope Paul VI. Fernando Cento acted as papal envoy on numerous occasions in Italy and abroad. On April 23, 1965, he was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Velletri .

He died on January 13, 1973 in Rome and was buried in the parish church of Pollenza.
