history
The archbishopric was on May 30, 1784 by Pope Pius VI. established as the Apostolic Prefecture of Newfoundland . The Apostolic Prefecture of Newfoundland was founded on January 5, 1796 by Pius VI. raised to the apostolic vicariate . On June 4, 1847, the Vicariate Apostolic Newfoundland was by Pope Pius IX. raised to the diocese. The Diocese of Newfoundland gave up on February 29, 1856 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Harbor Grace .
On February 29, 1856, the Diocese of Newfoundland was renamed the Diocese of Saint John's, Newfoundland . The diocese of Saint John's, Newfoundland gave up parts of its territory on May 9, 1870, establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of West Newfoundland . Another assignment of territory took place on September 16, 1870 to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Placentia . In 1891 the Apostolic Prefecture of Placentia was dissolved and the territory was annexed to the Diocese of Saint John's, Newfoundland. On February 8, 1904, the diocese of Saint John's, Newfoundland was raised to an archbishopric by Pope Pius X.
